Outside investors discover Custer, Custer County

A Valentine, Neb., couple recently purchased 40 acres of land at the former STAR Academy grounds just south of Custer, and now the former Shopko building in Custer has been purchased by Keating Resources, a Dallas, Texas, and Naples, Fla.-based investment company. The word is out that South Dakota is open for business and outside money is beginning to pour into the state and Custer County.

‘Hal’ has become reality

There’s a joke from some years back that goes something like this:
“He asked me why I own so many guns, so I looked him right in the eye and said, “Because of the Decepticons!” 
“He laughed. I laughed. The toaster laughed. I shot the toaster.”
For those of you who don’t know what Decepticons are, they are sentient robots in the fictional universe of the Transformers.
Maybe those Decepti-cons are not so fictional in our universe.

Patricia “Patty” Ann (Rosse) Kelley was born in Custer, S.D., Nov. 21, 1935, to Paul and Gladys Rosse.
Patty graduated from Custer High School in 1954 and then received her two-year teaching certificate from Northern Teachers College and Black Hills Teachers College.
In 1957, Patty married her high school sweetheart, James L. Kelley. They settled in Custer where together they owned and operated Kelley Drug and raised four loving children.

Whereas, Article IV, Section 3 of the South Dakota Constitution authorizes the governor to convene special sessions of the South Dakota Legislature  by Executive Proclamation for the purpose stated in the proclamation; and 

GOP platform is about capitalism

In contrast to the main tenents of the Democrat party national platform which we published last week, we’ll take a look at the main planks of the Republican party platform heading into the Nov. 3 election. Make your own decision.
• Rebuilding the economy and creating jobs. Before the virus hit early this year, the U.S. had one of the hottest economies in the history of this nation.
• Fair and simple taxes for growth. Republicans consider the establishment of a pro-growth tax code a moral imperative.

Elections have consequences

As Republicans who suffered through eight years of the Obama-Biden administration found out, and Democrats these past four years of the Trump administration discovered, elections do have consequences. When Obama glibly told complaining Republicans, “Win some elections!” they and others took that to heart and elected Donald Trump president in 2016.
Now we are faced with one of those defining moments in history when the outcome of a major election will certainly determine the course of our country. These are not idle words. This is nothing to joke about.

Buffalo Roundup 2020, the annual Custer State Park event was this past Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 24-26. I worked in the two Grand Old Party  booths sponsored by Pennington and Custer County Republicans. Boy, was that an inspiring event!  First off, this year’s Roundup was probably a bigger melting pot of citizens from all around the United States than ever before.  

COVID-19 session was informative

I would like to thank everyone who attended the listening session I set up regarding the additional COVID-19 funding of $1.25 billion. We had a nice turnout and I really appreciated the South Dakota Speaker of the House, Steve Haugaard, coming to Rapid City to listen to the concerns and ideas of West River citizens.  

Democrats spell out platform

The  2020 Democratic Party Platform is now posted on the Internet and we are passing it along as a public service. It pretty much spells out in its 92 pages how a DNC House,  Senate, and President would run the United States.
It clearly states exactly how the DNC proposes to handle every problem faced by America and includes:
•Universal healthcare and Medicaid for all Americans and illegal aliens. (Pg 61)
•$15 minimum wage
•Immediate citizenship for illegals (Pg 63)
•Free college (Pg 65)
