Thank you to everyone who helped us celebrate the library’s 50th Anniversary. It was a great event with good company, beautiful flowers, and tasty food.

Chapel honors Nick Clifford

The Memorial Chapel at Mountain View Cemetery in Keystone is close to completion.

The chapel was donated by Carolyn Clifford to mark the passing of her husband, Nick, who passed away in 2019.

“When I got the idea for the chapel it was about a year ago in October,” Carolyn said. “This was before Nick passed away.”

The inspiration came after listening to a dedication of a chapel given by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

The Cliffords had a soft spot for the cemetery.

Holiday traditions coming up

A slew of holiday season traditions are coming up in both Hill City and Keystone.

Keystone will be holding the 13th annual Victorian Christmas and Turkey Bingo event on Nov. 21 at the Keystone Community Center and Library.

Hill City honors vets

On Veterans Day (Nov. 11) at 9 a.m., the Hill City School District assembled with members of the community to honor those who have fought for our nation.

The ceremony is held every year in recognition of Veterans Day, and this year was no different.

“We honor everyone who has served our nation on this Veterans Day,” said Kadyn Comer who, along with Mikennah Oleson, lead the ceremony.

Schrier is new fire chief

For the first time since 2009, Hill City has a new fire chief.

Craig Comer has stepped down as chief, and Howard Schrier will step up to fill that role.

“It was time for fresh blood,” Comer said. “I felt that it was just time to get some fresh ideas and fresh leadership in the chief’s position.”

Comer was honored with an open house at Art Anderson Memorial Fire Hall on Nov. 6, bringing people from across the community to celebrate the achievements of former chief Comer.

Hair down in Heart of the Hills

Girlfriends once again descended onto the streets of Hill City to celebrate the 8th annual Girlfriends Weekend in the Heart of the Hills.

While some businesses reported the event was “slower” than usual, the event proved to be a relaxing time for the women who came.

Sage Weber, 33 from Riverton, Wyo., planned the trip to Hill City for her and her friends as a getaway.

“I would say from where we live it’s like the closest getaway that’s not a city,” she said. “You can rent a house and get to everything here. It has a small town feel and it’s so fun.”

Keystone getting its first ‘ship’

Keystone is getting its first Earthship.

Local Trenton Braun is building an Earthship greenhouse to help sustain his family.

“I’ve been working on it for 2 years,” said Braun. “It’s an endeavor and a gamble. We’re lucky enough to have three-and-a-half, acres and we are trying to be as self sufficient as possible.”

Braun is creating his Earthship from donated old tires, aluminum cans, sand, lumber and plexiglass.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the library’s Read for the Record Event Oct. 29. We appreciate the support for early literacy in our community.

The celebration of the library’s 50th Anniversary is taking shape. Please plan to join us Nov. 12 at 5:30 p.m. We will have the celebration spread out through the library and the Kid’s Annex with plenty of space and delicious refreshments. If you can please wear a mask and your smile!

Lots to be proud of

I would personally like to thank all of the businesses that participated in the merchant trick or treat after school last week. As superintendent, my heart swelled  with community pride as I saw our business leaders handing out candy and making memories for our students. As a father of five, I can vouch for the joy and excitement of kids getting to run up and down main street collecting candy. What a cool community we live in!

Boo Bash, Pumpkin Festival Saturday

For the second year in a row, and in a year which brought much uncertainty, one thing is certain: a family-friendly socially-distanced outdoor community event will be added to the line-up of Hill City’s spooky October festivities —The Hill City Children’s Boo Bash and Pumpkin Festival.
