Small in numbers, big on speed

There’s an old adage in football that speed kills. If that’s the case, the Custer High School football team should be pretty deadly this fall.
What the team lacks in numbers (only 27 players are out, which will easily make Custer one of the smallest rosters in the Class A ranks) it makes up for in athleticism and pure speed, Custer head coach Dave Williams said.
“Fast, fast and fast again,” Williams said of team strengths. “We have a lot of speed.”

Golf team strong at the top

When the Custer High School golf team takes to the course this fall, it will do so behind the talent of three golfers who between them have taken multiple trips to the state golf tournament.
After that? Well, there are some questions.

Picking an all-decade team for boys basketball at Custer is always difficult because of the storied tradition and seemingly constant flow of good players who come through the program. I remember how tough it was for last decade’s team, and this one isn’t much easier. This particular team is guard-heavy, as those were in much greater supply than all-decade worthy big men. Narrowing it down to 12 players for my team took some time, but I like the squad I ended up with.

All Decade Team - Girls Cross Country

Like their male counterparts, this team is chock-full of solid runners, and there were a lot of good nominees to be on the team. The girls’ teams haven’t been as top-heavy as the boys team, as there are no state champions, but the state-championship winning teams have had tremendous depth and that made for some tough choices in picking the team. A couple of the girls were no-brainers. It gets difficult after that.
