Studebaker owners from 13 states gathered in downtown Custer Sept. 6  for a free show to visitors in celebration of this historic automobile brand and showing their cars and trucks. These had been manufactured from the 1920s through 1966.

7:48 p.m.: A Minnesota motorcyclist took a wrong turn or two in the Hell Canyon area and got stuck on a road that “suddenly turned to sand.” Dispatchers and deputies spent several hours locating and assisting the wrong-way rider, who at one point, while waiting to be found, asked for advice on what to do if approached by wolves or coyotes. The dispatcher’s advice to honk his horn and race his engine loudly apparently worked, as the biker was rescued from the wilderness without incident.      

VFW Queen of Hearts jackpot now up to $116K

Queen of Hearts Mania has hit Custer once again.
The Custer VFW will host hundreds—and hundreds—of hopeful people from near and far this Friday, all with one goal in mind: Get that Queen of Hearts.
The Custer VFW’s Queen of Hearts game has a record jackpot waiting for one lucky person, and if someone is lucky enough to win the pot Friday, they will walk away with—if they are present, that is—$116,056.
You read that correctly.

Kopp brings jiu-jitsu to Custer

Looking for a good workout, a way to boost your confidence or a way to test mental toughness?
How about all three?
Look no further than the jiu-jitsu classes now being offered at Hub Fitness, thanks to a Custer High School graduate who has come home to share his love of the sport with the Black Hills.
Alex Kopp, a Custer High School Class of 2011 graduate, leads classes for both adults and youth, saying it is his hope he can share his passion for jiu-jitsu, a sport he said has made his life signficantly better.

Quilts galore on hand at show

The Hill City Quilt and Fiber Arts Show was once again a huge success with organizers saying about 800 people came to the Gins Gym Saturday alone.
The show boasted so many entries this year organizers had to get creative on where to display the quilts that could be seen in virtually every nook and cranny of the space. In total, 456 quilts and 100 fiber arts displays were featured this year, with Best in Show in the quilt category  entitled, “Annalise My Vintage Rose,” going to Kristie Evans, a new Custer resident and new member of the Heart of the Hills Quilt Guild.

Plein air returns to usher in fall season

The ninth annual Black Hills Plein Air Paint Out is coming to Hill City Sept. 17-19. 
Plein Air is free for attendees and is presented by the Hill City Arts Council (HCAC), a nonprofit with a mission to nurture and support the arts and humanities in Hill City.
There are 10 painters coming to Hill City. Some are returning artists, while others are coming for the first time. 
The more intimate number of artists gives artists an opportunity to showcase more of their work and sell more pieces, which is one of the goals of the event.

Postal problems largely unchanged

The slight improvements are limited to mail sent from elsewhere to some parts of the state, and most outbound mail delivery has gotten worse or not changed at all, according to USPS data.
U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds, a South Dakota Republican who's up for re-election this year, has largely led the charge to reform USPS operations in the state.
Beyond the data, he has shared anecdotal evidence indicating the problem is far from solved, even as USPS begins investigating its own performance in South Dakota.
