Sorenson claims home championship

For the first time in a long time, Custer High School golf has a tournament champion.
Curtis Sorenson, by virtue of firing a round of 73, claimed medalist honors at last Thursday’s Custer Invitational, topping the rest of the field on the Wildcat’s home course.
“I think Curtis did well because of some home cooking. He’s playing on a course he grew up on. He’s very capable of doing that,” head coach Paul Kelley said. “There is just a couple of holes that come back to bite him once in a while. It was fun to watch. It was a great round.”

Two freshmen lead Wildcats to victory

Two freshmen boys led the Custer Jr./Sr. High School cross country team to a first place victory at the Chadron Cross Country Invitational Sept. 11. Head coach Karen Karim said the meet held some of the best competition she’s seen from the ’Cats this season. Especially since by the end of the last race on the hilly course, it was close to 90 degrees in Chadron.
“It’s a challenging place to race. I thought they stepped up and competed well,” said Karim. “It was nice to see the boys win the meet, because there were decent teams that we were competing against.”

Football team burned by visiting Comets

The visiting Rapid City Christian Comets dominated on both sides of the ball while scoring 41 first quarter points on the way to a 54-0 win over the Custer High School football team last Friday evening at Wildcat Field.
The game was called with 17 seconds left in the third period due to the mercy rule.

Wildcats battle it out on the court

With six games in five days, the Custer Jr./Sr. High School volleyball team had a long, hard week with some highs and lows.
The week started with a home game against the Sturgis Brown Scoopers at the Custer Armory Sept. 8. The Scoopers brought a deep bench and two 6-2  girls in the front row, putting up some solid blocks.
In the first set, the Wildcats came out hard, maintaining a solid lead. However, the ’Cats seemed to get stuck at 22 points as the Scoopers rallied.

Wildcats win two despite injuries

With three girls down with sprained ankles, the Custer Wildcats varsity volleyball team had to adjust on the fly to take down the Douglas Patriots and Newell Irrigators last week. 
Jayda Bennett and Rylan Lowe sprained their ankles the previous week. Head coach Shayna Young said, “They were able to play this week, but they were still pretty tender and sore.” 
The Wildcats started with a hard-fought match at Douglas High School against the Patriots Sept. 1, winning in five sets at 11-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-23 and 15-9. 

Sorenson in top 10 at Belle Fourche

Curtis Sorenson placed in the top 10 to lead the Custer High School golf team at the Sept. 3 pre-region meet at Belle Fourche.
Sorenson shot a round of 83, and was joined in the 80s by Mason Dirkes, who shot 88. Rounding out the Wildcat entries were Phoenix Barrick at 92, Bodie VanDerBoom at 97 and Brennon Gangel, also at 97.
Medalist honors went to Andrew Levine of St. Thomas More, with a round of 72.  Sorenson and Dirkes tied for eighth in the two-man best ball competition with a score of 78.

Top-ranked Chargers pummel Wildcats

It was a game to forget for the Custer High School football team last Friday evening, as the Wildcats were standing on the tracks as the locomotive that is the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers came through in a 61-0 demolition that saw the game ended via mercy rule at halftime. The Chargers, the top-ranked team in the state in Class A, led 54-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Mixed results for ’Cats at Augie Twilight

The Custer Wildcats faced scorching temperatures and continual changes at the Augustana Twilight Cross Country Meet at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls Sept. 4. 
“It’s a huge meet, and they kept pushing things back and changing things. They canceled a couple of races, and they ended up taking the junior varsity entrants and only having them run 1.5 miles,” said head coach Karen Karim. 

Volleyball seeking to serve up success

Serving up some solid percentages, the Custer Jr./Sr. High School volleyball team started the season off on a high note with a 3-0 win in the game against the Philip Scotties Aug. 27. The Armory was packed with fans of both teams, and a Custer student cheer section, adorned in leis and tropical shirts, chanted and stomped in the stands throughout. 

Wildcats compete at Raider Invitational

The Custer High School golf team had one meet last week, traveling to Meadowbrook Golf Course in Rapid City to compete in the Raider Invitational last Thursday.
The Wildcats finished in ninth place as a team, finishing 81 strokes over par. St. Thomas More again won the team championship, finishing at 39 over par. The Cavaliers also had the top three finishers at the meet, including medalist Brady Sage, who finished with a score of 77.
Not far behind Sage was Custer’s top finisher, Curtis Sorenson, who fired a round of 82. That was good for a tie for ninth place.
