Boys working toward another record season

The Custer High School Wildcat boys wrestling team will start off the season at home with duals and a tournament, both in Custer this week.
The boys are expected to have another strong season after two record-breaking years for the team. Last year the team placed third at state, its highest placement ever after one-upping the previous year’s record of earning fourth. With many returning wrestlers to the team this season, topping the previous years’ state tournament results could be well within reach.

Girl wrestlers will hit the mat this week

The Custer High School Wildcat girl wrestlers will hit the mat in the first meets of the season this week, the Custer Duals and Custer Invitational on Thursday and Saturday.
The girls team is still relatively young, and yet many of them have now years of experience under their belts.
Returning wrestlers this year include River Bailey, Jessica Hite, Mattea Marshall, Kaylie Morgan, Addie Sander, Essah Syverson and Keira Thorp.  New to the team this year are Tiara Faehnrich, Avari Dorrance and Kylie Bird, Faehnrich transfering from Hill City this year.

Volleyball season comes to end

The 2024 Custer High School Wildcat volleyball season came to a close last Thursday night with a loss in the region semifinals to the St. Thomas More Cavaliers.
The match went into five sets, with Custer catching a second wind to take the third and fourth sets after losing the first two. In the end, the score stood 18-25, 10-25, 26-24, 25-14, 7-15.   
The team came into the match with previous defeats to STM, but were optimistic for a competitive match, which they got.

Wildcats strike gold in match with ’Diggers

The Custer High School Wildcats played their last regular season match of the volleyball season Oct. 29, and came away with a win against the Lead-Deadwood Golddiggers in straight sets (25-16, 25-17, 25-13).
Head coach Jill Hohn said was happy with how the team perfomed in the match and that she thought the girls played well.
“Our passing, serving, and hitting was better that it had been the last few games. Our energy level was also up and it is wonderful to see smiles on their faces,” said Jill Hohn.

Wildcats blast Tatanka in season finale

On a second down play midway through the second quarter of last Thursday’s football game against Lakota Tech, Custer’s Kallin Thomas took the handoff and plunged up the middle before being tripped up on a three-yard gain.
Thomas rose from the ground and held the ball aloft, beaming with pride over his short gain.
In a normal context, it would have seemed unusual to celebrate an otherwise nondescript run. When you consider that Thomas is a senior offensive lineman for the Wildcats, the celebration is much more understandable.

Wildcats get Rangers’ revenge

The Custer High School Wildcat volleyball team began its week with a loss to the Hill City Rangers last Tuesday. Although Custer had beaten Hill City previously in the season, this time the Rangers were back with something to prove and were able to come away with a win in straight sets (25-18, 25-12, 25-15).

Wildcat boys race to second at state meet

The Custer High School Wildcat boys cross country team took second place at the Class A State Championship Meet at Hart Ranch in Rapid City last Saturday, with two runners earning medals for placing in the top 20 runners individually.
Senior Sean Shipp earned fifth place at the meet with a time of 16:49.99.
Hill City’s Tate Grabow, a junior, won the meet with his time of 16:17.50.

Cross country boys win region championship

Both the Custer High School boys and girls cross country teams have advanced to the Class A State meet after the boys claimed the Region 5A championship and the girls came away with third last week at Hart Ranch outside Rapid City. Both needed to finish in the top three teams to qualify for state. Individual racers could also qualify for the state meet by finishing in the top 20 places.

Hit and a miss for volleyball team

The girls faced a win and a loss last week as they met up with Mahpiya Luta on Tuesday and St. Thomas More on Thursday.
The team’s match with St. Thomas More (STM) was its third of the season and its third loss to the team, ending in three sets 20-25,-20-25, 19-25.
“I was disappointed with our play against STM.  We started the first set with over half of their points coming from our errors.  They are a good team, and you can’t give them those opportunities,” said head coach Jill Hohn.

Big-play Comets wallop Wildcats

Led by a big-play offense and a rugged defense the Rapid City Christian Comet football team laid waste to the Custer Wildcats last Friday evening at Hart Ranch, rolling to a 30-0 halftime lead on the way to a 44-7 win.
“They are good. You can tell by watching they are well coached. They are aggressive. Their aggressiveness up front created problems for us,” Custer head coach Russ Evans said. “Kudos to them.”
