10 years ago, 2014 — Budgeting issues, inadequate internal auditing controls, bill paying prior to approval of the bills and purchasing items from county employees were among the issues raised by the South Dakota Department of Legislative Audit during its audit of the county’s financial statements for the past few years. The audit was presented to the Custer County Commission by Al Shaefer of the Department of Legislative Audit at a Custer County Commission meeting.

West River History Conference Oct. 3-4

The 32nd annual West River History Conference (WRHC) is scheduled for Hill City and Crazy Horse Memorial, Thursday and Friday, Oct. 3-4.
“We’re an annual event that rotates from town to town,” said conference president Tim Velder.  “This year we’re excited to come to the Hill City area because of its incredible history as the home of Crazy Horse Memorial and the South Dakota Railroad Museum. But during the conference we will hear stories of other communities and characters representing all of western South Dakota and eastern Wyoming.”

Down Memory Lane Sept. 25

10 years ago, 2014 — Boosted by a defense that forced five turnovers and posted its second consecutive shutout, the Custer High School football team improved to 4-0 last Friday night by defeating Lead-Deadwood 26-0 at Wildcat Field in the team’s homecoming game. Casey Seidler had a big night on defense for Custer, forcing two fumbles and recovering one, while also recording five tackles, including one for a loss. Just as he had all season, David Sigdestad led Custer in tackles from his linebacker position with 12 total tackles.

Hot Springs pushes for prosperity

Patrick Richards grew up near this Southern Black Hills city and has now – at age 43 – returned to settle down and raise a family.
He and his wife, Alison, were living in Las Vegas until recently when they decided the Hot Springs area would be a better place to raise their 3-year-old son, Dexter, and any other siblings who may come along.
And yet, the couple thinks the city could be improved and be even more accommodating to young parents – and health nuts – like themselves if it had a trail system that allowed for longer rides or walks through the entire community.

Early voting for South Dakota’s Nov. 5 general election has begun.
Check registration
To cast an early ballot, voters should first make sure they’re registered. Voter registration status can be checked in the South Dakota Secretary of State’s online voter information portal at vip.sdsos.gov/viplogin.aspx.
The registration deadline for the Nov. 5 election is Oct. 21. Voter registration instructions are available online from the secretary of state at sdsos.gov/elections-voting/voting/register-to-vote/default.aspx.
