Tuesday, Sept. 2
4:51 p.m.: A missing 7-year-old child was reported in the Custer area. The kid was eventually located safe and sound after getting on the wrong school bus to go home and ending up on the wrong side of the county.

— Dr. Joy Falkenburg was shocked to receive the Edward J. Batt Memorial Award from the University of South Dakota’s school of family medicine in honor of her mentorship and dedication to medical students. The award is given each year to an outstanding faculty member from USD’s family medicine department. Only a handful of West River medical professionals have received the award ... The Moore family spent a morning at Flintstones theme park shortly before it closed, reminiscing and re-enacting some childhood photographs taken over 20 years ago .

Thursday, Aug. 28
7:48 a.m.: The sheriff and a deputy dealt with a well-known California transient who was illegally camping in his van down by the river…or, at least down by French Creek in Custer State Park. After receiving a citation for not having a state park entrance sticker, the male was encouraged to find somewhere else to be. Other charges may be pending on the dissolute drifter.

Studebaker awards presented

Studebaker cars and trucks manufactured from 1915-66 provided a variety of models and styles for locals and visitors to see Sunday, Aug. 3, in downtown Custer.  Favorable weather also made the weekend pleasant for owners who drove to Custer from seven states. The free event was sponsored by members of the Dakotas Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club.
