Ranger golfers dust off clubs for BHC

The Hill City Rangers golf team dusted off its clubs to tee off at the Black Hills Conference (BHC) golf tournament at the Boulder Canyon Golf Course in Sturgis Sept. 29.
As Class B, the Rangers golf season runs in the spring while most BHC Class A and AA schools compete in the fall. Despite the difference in season, all BHC teams are invited to compete at the tournament in the fall.

Busy week for Ranger volleyball

Hill City volleyball packed in a lot of time on the court this week, playing two regular season games before traveling to Nebraska for a weekend tournament.
Hill City opened the week Tuesday on the road against Philip where they battled throughout the first two sets but struggled to keep up in the third, ultimately falling to the Scotties in a sweep, 25-21, 25-22, and 25-17.

Rangers wrangled by Ranchers

It was a tighter game than the score might suggest, as the Hill City Rangers traveled to Harding County to toe-up against the Ranchers Friday night.
“We fought. It was a close game, kind of a back-and-forth battle,” said head football coach Brett Eckert.
The Rangers lost two players early in the game, one to a concussion injury and the second due to ejection from the game.
“We had a pretty rough hand of cards dealt to us,” said Eckert, “but we were still able to kind of fight our way back.”

Rangers win back-to-back games

Hill City volleyball gave its homecoming week a boost with back-to-back victories, edging out Lead-Deadwood in five sets on the road before returning home Thursday night to defeat Newell in a three-set sweep.
“We are continuing to play more consistently and improve with each game,” said head coach Allie Henderson. “It takes a lot of mental toughness to overcome a tough opening season.”

Hard hit from Bennett County for homecoming

The Hill City Rangers football team wrapped up a busy homecoming week in front of their home crowd under the Friday night lights, but the home-field advantage wasn’t enough.
“Bennett County is a really good football team,” said head coach Brett Eckert.

Rangers make some noise at Hart Ranch

While the rest of Hill City was cheering at the pep-rally, the Rangers cross country team was making its own noise at Hart Ranch Thursday.
The Hill City cross country team competed at the Rapid City Area Schools Invitational Cross Country meet at Hart Ranch with two top-35 finishes and several improved personal best times.
Sophomore John Titus (J.T.) Isakson led the boys’ team, finishing 28th with a time of 17:07.7, just short of his fastest time (17:07.4) followed by Jeremiah White in 35th with a new personal best (PB) time of 17:17.4.

Hill City volleyball still swinging

The Rangers volleyball team suffered yet another tough loss Tuesday, falling to the Hot Springs Bison in a three-set sweep. 
The two teams met just four days earlier at the Rapid City Invitational Tournament where Hill City forced the Bison into a third set, finally falling 25-15. 
The Rangers couldn’t find the same momentum at home, coming out competitive but allowing Hot Springs to pull away late in each set. The Bison took the opening set 25-16 and followed with a 25-17 in the second set.

Rangers ‘scrape, claw, fight’ through season

After a lopsided toss to Timber Lake last week, the Hill City Rangers put together one of their better offensive performances of the season, keeping within one score and pushing to the whistle in last Friday’s 29-21 loss to Lemmon-McIntosh on the road.
“Lemmon is a lot better team than I think a lot of people give them credit for,” said head coach Brett Eckert. “They’re 2-3 and their losses are all against good teams.”

Rangers show fight in five set battle

Hill City came within four points of flipping the script Tuesday night at home against the Douglas Patriots. After dropping their first four matches of the season, the Rangers pushed the Patriots to the brink in a five-set battle before Douglas narrowly escaped with a 15-11 victory in the deciding set.  
Hill City came out strong, going point-for- point against the Patriots in the first set and battling back from a five-point deficit to a seven-point win, 25-18.

Cross country team races at Heartland Preview

The Hill City Ranger cross country team traveled to Yankton last weekend to compete in the Nike Heartland Preview at Yankton Trail Park, facing a large competitive field of runners from across the region.
“When you’re taking that much time to drive across the state, as a coach, you’re hopeful that it pays off, and I think it did,” said head coach Joe Noyes.
