Hill City girls sweep Scoopers, fall to Wall

The AA Sturgis Scoopers met their match Tuesday night, falling to the Hill City Rangers girls basketball team on the Scoopers’ home floor. 
Hill City jumped to a quick 6-1 lead despite playing at a much slower tempo than usual.
“I think they did a really good job because we end up having to play those slow games every once in awhile,” said head coach Anna Eckert. “We’re used to playing a little faster pace, like we did against Philip, but we’re able to play against both types of teams.”

Boys stop Scoopers, get clipped by Eagles

The Hill City Rangers are 7-7 on the season after a win against the Sturgis Brown  Scoopers (4-6) and a loss to the Wall Eagles (10-3).
The Scoopers were the first to score, grabbing three points at the Jan. 27 game. The Rangers could not make anything happen early on with Zane Messick missing an open layup three minutes into the game with the Rangers trailing. Brensen Veneklasen  grabbed the tip and Hill City tied it up. 

Aspen Frasier dominates the mats at Mahpiya Luta

Aspen Frasier continues to dominate the mats in Hill City, placing first at the Mahpiya Luta Wrestling Tournament Jan. 31. 
Frasier had a round one  win against Sherman Landon Brown of Lakota Tech. The match lasted 2:54 and featured three nearfalls and a takedown.
Frasier faced Casen Humbracht of Hot Springs in his second round, in a one period win. 
In round three, Frasier easily defeated Finnley Osborne of Douglas-Rapid City Christian.

Ranger wrestlers show intention in Chadron

Aspen Frasier continues to strut his stuff, placing third in the 106 weight class  at the Chadron (Neb.) Invitational Jan. 24.
The seventh-grader  faced Kray Otte of Gordon- Rushville, Neb., in his first match. Frasier got two takedowns and a nearfall in the two period match in the 10-1 two-minute win. Frasier also faced Canon Horner of Natrona County (Casper, Wyo.). A takedown and a nearfall in the second period gave him the victory.

Ranger girls hit their stride

With the toughest matchups behind them, the Hill City Ranger girls basketball team has hit its stride, going on a four-game winning streak and tipping the record scale back in its favor with three big wins last week.
“Our schedule gears us up for some really tough games in the beginning of the season. It’s not only a physical battle for these girls, but it can become just as much a tough mental battle as well,” said head coach Anna Eckert. “I think they are starting to understand that basketball is a process, and that we need to keep improving daily.”

Dax Frandsen continued to sit on the sidelines with an injury as the Hill City Rangers took on the Belle Fourche Broncs at home Jan. 20.
Brensen Veneklasen got the tip, but Nick Schroeder got the first points of the game.
The Rangers began the game on man-to-man defense, forcing an offensive foul. Veneklasen shot from the post to extend the lead. Messick hit two before the Broncs’ Sern Weishaar silenced the crowd with a three-pointer.

The Hill City Rangers are at 4-6 on the season, picking up a win against the Sundance, Wyo., Bulldogs after a loss to Sioux Falls Christian Chargers.
The  Chargers, who have made an appearance at the state tournament for the last 10 years, came to Gins Gym Jan. 16. 
They took the tip and scored immediately. The Rangers came in strong with a scramble on the ground giving them possession. They played man-to- man, but still the Chargers grabbed three before a low pass from Zane Messick to Mason Buehler put Hill City on the board. 

Aspen Frasier places fourth at Spearfish

Aspen Frasier placed fourth at the Black Hills Conference Boys Tournament Jan. 17 in Spearfish. The 106-pound class featured seven wrestlers overall.
Frasier wrestled four matches, winning two and losing two.
Frasier had three takedowns and two near falls in his win against Wace Kammerer of Lead- Deadwood. Frasier’s other win came against Hot Springs’ Whitten Luper, with Frasier racking up four takedowns, an escape and two nearfalls.

Rangers girls basketball team bounces back

After facing arguably its toughest matchup of the season Friday night, the Hill City Rangers girls basketball team bounced back Saturday, turning around both the game and, it hopes, its season.
The Rangers opened their weekend against defending state champion Sioux Falls Christian. 

Ranger wrestlers take down Monster

The Hill City wrestling team took on the Mid Dakota Monster and Bride of the Monster in Presho  this weekend. The girls faced 43 teams at the Bride. 
Daisy Munoz had a win, taking down Khazania Cross of Todd County in the first period.
