Wildcat girls upset Belle during 3-0 week

Don’t look now, but the Custer High School girls basketball team is quickly becoming the team nobody wants to see come postseason play.
The Wildcats have now won three in a row thanks to a perfect week of play last week, including one of the bigger upsets in recent program history when the Wildcats upset Belle Fourche 50-43 last Saturday afternoon in the Armory.

Wrestlers cowgirl up in the Cowboy State

The Custer High School girls wrestling team competed in the Cowboy State, Wyoming, over the past weekend at the Lady Dogie Classic in Newcastle, Wyo. The team earned fifth place as a whole, with several individual wrestlers placing at the meet too.
“This was the first year we’ve been over to compete in Newcastle,” said coach Clayton Sander. “It was nice to see some different competition.”

Is the Custer High School boys basketball team this good, or was last weekend’s competition shall we say, less than stellar?
That was the question on the coaching staff’s mind following an absolute dominant week of basketball by the Wildcats, as the team improved its record to 13-3 with three blowout wins over Douglas, Hot Springs and Belle Fourche by an average of over 40 points.
“You always worry if we are going to play to the level of our competition,” Custer head coach Paul Kelley said. “Right now we are playing like we are capable of playing.”

Wildcat boy wrestlers finish fifth at Black Hills Classic

The Custer High School boys wrestling team went to Hill City to compete in the Black Hills Classic tournament over this past weekend, taking fifth place as a team. Individually, many wrestlers did well and earned top spots on the podium.
“It was good. A lot of younger kids stepped up and we’re trying to get kids back on the mat,” said head coach Jared Webster.
Now, nearing the end of the season, Webster said the team is focused on delivering their best at the time when it matters most.

Ranger wrestlers compete in Newell, host Black Hills Classic

Andres Hernandez was the top scorer of the week for the Hill City High School Rangers wrestling team, claiming a second and sixth place finish.
The Rangers kicked off the week with the Newell Round Robin Tournament Feb. 4.

Girls improve to 10-6 with a pair of road wins

Heading into back-to-back away games, Hill City High School girls basketball coach Anna Eckert knew the team had to come ready to play.
“We have had a few tough back-to-back games this season where we have played tired and struggled to play solid on both sides of the ball,” said Eckert.
Hill City kicked off with a slow start against Newell  during their Feb. 6 matchup but were able to pick up the momentum in the second half, climbing to a 19-point victory over the Irrigators for a 62-41 win.

Rangers boys defeat Chadron, Hot Springs

Sticking to the game plan, execution and energy. Those were the key factors, according to head coach Laramie Harvey, in the Hill City High School Rangers boys basketball victories on the road last week against the Chadron (Neb.) Cardinals Feb. 7 and the Hot Springs Bison Feb. 8.
The Rangers took the court against the Cardinals and exploded into an early lead putting up 20 points in the first quarter while holding the Cardinals to just 11. Harvey contributes their win to the execution and energy in that first quarter that gave the Rangers the momentum they needed.

Buehler breaks school scoring record

The Hill City High School Rangers boys basketball team had a big week with back-to-back wins and  shattered a 16-year school record.
The Rangers took on the Wall Eagles Jan. 30 in a well-matched game at home. The Eagles took an early lead and held it for most of the game.
In the second quarter Zane Messick was fouled on a three-point shot and sunk the free throw for a four-point play, bringing the Rangers within two points of Wall. Messick followed with another three, bringing the Rangers ahead for the first time in the game.

Daisy Munoz places sixth at Belle Fourche Invitational

It was another tough week for the Hill City High School Rangers wrestling team. Daisy Munoz was the only wrestler from Hill City who was able to progress to the second day of the Belle Fourche Boys and Girls Invitational Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, ultimately claiming sixth place.
“We got to learn a lot of good wrestling. I think this time of year you’ve seen everybody start to really develop from their practices and more competition. As you progress in the season, competition level just continues to rise,” said head coach Josh Robison.

Ranger girls soar over the Wall Eagles

The Hill City High School Rangers girls basketball team went head-to-head with the Wall Eagles Jan. 30 in front of their home crowd. Alaina Dean quickly put the Rangers on the board with her first of two three-point shots.
While the Rangers managed to hold their lead throughout the game, “they struggled a little bit defensively,” said head coach Anna Eckert.
