Custer boys take first at Belle Fourche

Sept. 11 was a banner day in Belle Fourche for the Custer High School cross country team. The Wildcat boys came in first place as a team, five of the boys medaled as top 10 runners and Kian Rusch placed third with a time of 17:39.32. 
“If I were really going to pick out any one person that just raced much better than he has been, it would have been Kian. He was very pleased with his race and how he felt, and I think that’s a positive for us because that leadership is going to be what we rely upon as the season goes on,” said head coach Karen Karim. 

Wildcats take first losses but keep on striking

The Custer High School volleyball team took its first losses of the season last week, but it also saw some great success. 
On Sept. 9, the Wildcats faced the Sturgis Brown Scoopers for an away game. 
“Sturgis was a difficult game for us. Sturgis played very, very well, and they threw up some huge blocks. Both of their middles are 6’2”, and we really had a difficult time adjusting to those blocks,” said head coach Jill Hohn. 

Soccer team down three more games

After a week off, the Custer Jr./Sr. High School soccer team had a full lineup with three games in five days. 
The game against the Douglas-New Underwood Patriots Tuesday, Sept. 9, could have been anyone’s game. The teams were evenly matched in size and play, and neither team had seen a victory yet this season.

On the first play of last Friday night’s contest between the Custer High School football team and Madison, Henry Veenhof flicked a bubble screen to Shane Veenhoff, who raced past the Custer defense for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead before many had even settled into their seats.
So it went for the Wildcats.
The homestanding Bulldogs piled up a 43-0 lead by halftime before calling off the (Bull)dogs in a final that finished with the same score as at the half.

’Cats strike first, Orioles strike often

On the Custer High School football team’s first possession of its game last Friday, quarterback Kawika Johncour kept the ball around the right side and raced to the corner of the end zone, stretching the ball over the pylon in front of a Lennox defender for a touchdown.
Following the Kiran Pesicka point after, the Wildcats were ahead of the second-ranked team in Class A 7-0.

Sorensons lead the way for Wildcat golf

It was a strong week of golf for the Brothers Sorenson, as the two led the Wildcat golfers at both last week’s Douglas Invitational as well as Monday’s Sturgis Invitational.
Curtis Sorenson fired a score of 82 at Boulder Canyon to lead the Wildcats at Sturgis, a score that was good for ninth place. Just behind him in 13th place was older brother Regan, who finished at 87.
Dillon Hanis was the next Wildcat to finish, firing an 88. He was followed by Brady Virtue at 90, Mason Dirkes at 91 and Bodie Van Der Boom at 96.

Wildcats rack up victories, prepare for games ahead

Just a few weeks in, the Custer High School volleyball team is sitting 8-0 for the season after its defeat of the Douglas Patriots and Newell Irrigators last week. 
“I’m just very, very, very happy with the way our season started. We do have some tough games coming up this week, but it’s just been an amazing start to the season,” said head coach Jill Hohn. 
On Sept. 2, the Wildcats faced the Douglas Patriots for a match at the Armory. Typically, Hohn said the Patriots have been a challenging team to face, but the Wildcats were determined to break that streak. 

Rangers tame the tigers

The Hill City Rangers football team is undefeated three games into its 2025-26 season. Hill City (3-0) roared past the Dupree Tigers (1-2) at home  Sept. 5, with a resounding 51-0 win.
The penalties began early in the game with a false start against Dupree on the opening kickoff where senior Caleb Sobolik took the ball to midfield. 

Rangers run with competitive attitude

The Ranger cross country team competed Friday at the Northern Hills Invitational Cross Country Meet in Spearfish. According to head coach Joe Noyes, the team raced “the most competitive and locked in we have looked at this point in a season.”

Spearfish sweeps Rangers in first conference game

The Rangers Volleyball team went head-to-head against the Spearfish Spartans on the road last Tuesday and suffered their first Black Hills Conference loss in a three-set sweep. 
The Spartans controlled the match from start to finish, making some critical first-set plays to take the lead 25-20.
Spearfish maintained control of the game despite a close and competitive exchange in the second set with Spearfish narrowly edging out the Rangers 25-23.
