Wednesday, March 5
2:03 a.m.: A  deputy and medical personnel dealt with a male in a parked vehicle at a Hermosa truck stop who was said by staff there to be “high on meth.” It turned out the male was simply sleeping off the booze the staff there had sold him in the bar. The male was put out of service until he sobered up.          

Fired former USFS employee ‘heartbroken’ by her dismissal

“The Agency finds, based on your performance, that you have not demonstrated that your further employment at the Agency would be in the public interest.”
Those 25 words comprised a portion of a termination letter received by Hanna Honors, who prior to Feb. 17, had served as a customer service representative for the Black Hills National Forest at the Hell Canyon Ranger District.

6:44 p.m.: A resident from another state called the dispatch center to warn that an asteroid was headed for the Black Hills and he wanted the residents to flee to the valleys for shelter before it hit, as he “really likes South Dakota.” As of press time, no celestial rocks had invaded Custer County.

Trade Show March 1

The public is invited to attend the annual Custer Trade Show to be held Saturday, March 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Custer School District Armory at 527 Montgomery St.
This show hosts a wide variety of exhibitors, ranging from financial services and building materials to jewelry and artwork. Concessions will be served throughout the day, so it’s a great way to spend the day with the whole family.
Admission is a free-will monetary donation to the Crazy Horse Composite Squadron Civil Air Patrol.

Sunday, Feb. 16
7:20 a.m.: A Lower French Creek Road resident called to complain about a helicopter that may or may not have been flying too low in the area. The resident also threatened to “arrest” the pilot if he flew by again. It was not clear how he planned to accomplish this task.

Farm-to-table comes to Hermosa

Cowboy hats and chore coats filled the Hermosa School cafeteria Thursday, Feb. 13, for a meal given to thank local ranchers who have donated meat to the Custer School District over the last year. A number of the donors have children who attend school in Hermosa, some are school board members and others are simply long-time local ranchers who want to give when and where they can.
