’Cats trampled by Bison, scratch Eagles

The Custer High School volleyball team battled it out against the Hot Springs Bison in a five-set game Tuesday, Oct. 7, but the Wildcats couldn’t get the last set over the net, losing 3-2.
“We played very poorly the first set, and came back in the other four sets and played better, but just couldn’t quite finish it out,” said head coach Jill Hohn.

Volleyball team makes a comeback

The Custer High School Wildcat volleyball team made a comeback in the season last week, with a victory over the Belle Fourche Broncs and a third-place finish at the Lakota Nation Invitational (LNI) in Rapid City. 
“They did a great job,” said head coach Jill Hohn. 
After losing to the Broncs a few days before, the ’Cats faced them again on their home court Sept. 30. 

Wildcats race into final three meets of the season

The cross country season is just about wrapped up for Custer Jr./Sr. High School, with just the Black Hills Conference, region and state meets to go.
Before that, the Wildcats competed at the Sturgis Invitational Cross Country Meet Oct. 2. It was once again in the mid-80s for the  afternoon meet, forcing the Wildcats to battle the heat as well as the course. 

Wildcat football trampled by Bison

Fresh off its first win of the season, the Custer High School football team took positive momentum into last Friday’s game against its rival the Hot Springs Bison, hoping to build its first winning streak of the season and bring the Southern Hills Showdown trophy back to Custer.
The Bison had other ideas.
Bolstered by a punishing ground game that racked up 348 yards—including 172 from Clancy Koupal—the Bison dominated the Wildcats in a 51-13 win.

Strong defense brings ’Cats first win

Clinging to a 19-18 lead late in last Friday evening’s game in Deadwood, the Custer High School football team needed one more defensive stop. They got it.
On a fourth and four from the 50 yard line, the Golddiggers ran a double pass—something they had run earlier, along with a bevy of screens—but the Wildcat defense was ready, with safety Brady Virtue stepping in front of the pass for an interception.
Game over.

Wildcats disappointed with the week

It was a disappointing week for the Custer High School volleyball team, with four losses and a victory against the Wall Eagles. 
The Wildcats started with a game against the Spearfish Spartans Sept. 25. Going into the game, Hohn expected Spearfish to show a similar level of competition as Rapid City Christian and St. Thomas More. 

Wildcat golfers qualify for state

The Custer High School golf team has qualified for next week’s Class A State Golf Tournament in Vermillion by virtue of its third-place team finish at Monday’s Region 4A meet at Southern Hills Golf Course in Hot Springs.
Regan Sorenson was the team’s top finisher, firing a round of 87, which was good for seventh place. He was followed closely by younger brother Curtis, who shot an 88, good for ninth place.
Mason Dirkes was the next-best score for the Wildcats, as he shot a 91. He was followed by Brady Virtue at 97 and Bodie Van Der Boom at 105.

Wildcats hit with the heat at Hart Ranch

The Custer Jr./.Sr High School cross country team stumbled into a scorcher at the Rapid City Area Schools High School Invitational at Hart Ranch Sept. 26. With a 1 p.m. start for the varsity boys and a 1:30 p.m. start for the varsity girls, it was around 87 degrees. 
“It was hot, and windy, and dusty and not what our kids are used to. A couple of them kind of melted, and we had some kids that felt sick from the weather and from the heat,” said coach Karen Karim. “It’s just not that hot in Custer most of the time.” 

Boys first, girls third at Custer Invite

Although the Custer High School Wildcats were using the Eldon Knudson Invitational Cross Country Meet at Rocky Knolls Golf Course as a training run, the boys walked away with a first place finish. 
“That wasn’t the primary goal when we ran it. I just wanted them to be on the course, to get a good workout in and to again run solidly as a team and pull each other along,” said head coach Karen Karim. 
Kian Rusch and Peyton Krueger ran stride for stride throughout the race, taking fourth at 18:16.16 and fifth at 18:17.31, respectively. 

Wildcats wrap up soccer season

For 60 percent of the game, the Custer Jr./Sr. High School soccer team dominated its home field, putting in 26 shots on goal, according to Hudl results. The ’Cats ended the season with a 4-2 loss to the Hot Springs Bison Sept. 16, but not without putting up a fight.
