Thursday, Aug. 28
7:48 a.m.: The sheriff and a deputy dealt with a well-known California transient who was illegally camping in his van down by the river…or, at least down by French Creek in Custer State Park. After receiving a citation for not having a state park entrance sticker, the male was encouraged to find somewhere else to be. Other charges may be pending on the dissolute drifter.

Studebaker awards presented

Studebaker cars and trucks manufactured from 1915-66 provided a variety of models and styles for locals and visitors to see Sunday, Aug. 3, in downtown Custer.  Favorable weather also made the weekend pleasant for owners who drove to Custer from seven states. The free event was sponsored by members of the Dakotas Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club.

Friday, Aug. 22
7:55 a.m.: A suspicious van was seen cruising around Pringle. A deputy found the vehicle was driven by the same transient California male that various cops dealt with earlier in the week. The male apologized for any alarm and said he was investigating a mystery in his machine, though he was not accompanied by a dog named Scooby. No doubt he would have solved it, too, if it weren’t for those meddling kids, er…deputies!

Hippie Hole Trail marked

The Rockerville Volunteer Fire Department (RVFD) has installed trail markers at Hippie Hole. The news was shared on a Facebook post by the department itself and confirmed in a separate interview with department chief Gail Schmidt of the RVFD.
Schmidt said the move took place after numerous conversations with the United States Forest Service (USFS). 
Markers were placed  Saturday, Sept. 6, with help from the Pennington County Search and Rescue (PCSAR) and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO).

Chamber hosts par-tee

The Hill City Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Golf Par-Tee.
The event is part fundraiser and part get- together, said executive director Erin Loder.
“While we’re excited to gather and enjoy time together as a community, we’re also raising funds to support the Hill City Chamber of Commerce. This is a chance to connect, celebrate and contribute to something meaningful,” Loder said. 

Keystone librarian goes above and beyond

If you walk into the Keystone Community Center and Library on any given summer day or an afternoon after school, you’re sure to find it buzzing with excitement and familiar faces. It is the hub for many Keystone kids who gather to shoot hoops, meet friends, dive into a good book or tackle homework.
For a town with no childcare options, the center is more than just a building: it’s a lifeline for parents with few other options. At the heart of it all is librarian Robin Scott, whose warm smile and steady presence have made her an anchor in the community.

There’s a whistle of nostalgia echoing through the pines at Buffalo Ridge Camp Resort, where a beloved piece of Custer history has returned to the tracks. 
Long before Buffalo Ridge welcomed campers, the grounds were home to the Flintstones Bedrock City, a quirky and colorful theme park inspired by the TV series of the modern stone-age family, “The Flintstones.”
