Veterans marching for veterans

For the challenge. For the camaraderie. For the.....fun?
Ask the four Custer veterans who in two weeks will embark upon a 110-mile endurance march as part of the Black Hills Veterans March and Marathon why they want to walk the entirety of the  Mickelson Trail over the course of four days, and you’ll get four different answers.

Cool day for duck race

About 330 ducks competed in this year’s Hill City Lions Club Rubber Duck Race. Ducks began the creek course at about 1:15 p.m., and by 1:54 p.m., duck No. 294, belonging to Tye Kuyper, had won the race. 
The brisk day did not bring many spectators, although those that came enjoyed carnival games, including a bean bag toss, duck shooting and a coin toss. Cassandra Ott donated her time face painting for about a half dozen children, including a long-haired boy she gave a curly mustache.

New prayer garden offers spiritual space for all

Offering a peaceful and serene refuge, beautiful landscaping and a quiet, spiritual outdoor space for reflection and prayer, Community Lutheran Church is inviting the community to visit its new Prayer Garden.
“God put on my heart to start a prayer garden,” said Gwen Collins. 
So when pastor Jeremy Durpey started talking about increasing prayer, Collins knew they had the perfect space. 
“It was that empty space by the fire pit. My husband and I thought, ‘Well, that’d be the perfect place for a prayer garden,’” said Collins. 

Be neighborly, control noxious weeds

Noxious weeds are a widespread and costly problem in the Black Hills and are affecting numerous local landowners. 

Patchwork of art, economics to be found at quilt show

The 26th annual Hill City Quilt and Fiber Arts  show is taking over Hill City for two days Sept. 6-7. 
“It’s a big thing,” said Lorena Freis, this year’s coordinator. Over 350 quilts have been entered.
A majority of the quilts will be in Gins Gym at Hill City High School.
Thirty-nine quilts will be hung up and down Main Street in Hill City.
While most quilts entered into the show come from women, about 10 to 15 men enter quilts into the show.

Hot Springs museum features Hargens

The Pioneer Museum has received nine new paintings by artist Charles W. Hargens, Jr. The museum has also received five new paintings by artist Beulah Donnell.
In addition to Hargens Jr. and Donnell, the museum honored the art of Robert Gossell at the Grand Reopening of the Pioneer Museum’s fourth floor July 13.
The roof of the Historic 1893 Schoolhouse museum was replaced this summer, making it once again safe to display art in the gallery. New electric roof vents were installed to help cool the upper floors of the building.
