Cross country does well at Belle

Custer’s varsity and JV cross country teams took home three first-place finishes and one second from the Belle Fourche Invite Thursday in spite of what coach Karen Karim called “terrible weather.” 

Karim said it was raining and windy in Belle Fourche and the course was soggy and slow, making for less impressive race times than the team had at the recent Augustana Twilight Meet.

Cheer team looks to ‘productive season’

After getting off to a slow start in their 2018 season, Custer’s mostly young and inexperienced competitive cheer team went on to take fourth place in the small squad division in the state tournament last October. While hoping to build on that success with several returning team members, coach Tiffany Newman says there are too many variables in play to make any predictions about the 2019 season which started last week. 

Another meet, another win for golf team

On Sept. 2 the Custer High School golf team continued its winning ways by cruising to the team title at the pre-region meet at Hart Ranch Golf Course outside Rapid City.
Dustyn Fish played his way to a second-place finish with an 87, followed by Austin Eggers in third at 89. Ryder Bailey was also in the top five, coming in fifth with a 90, while Dylan Polzine finished ninth at 99. Rounding out the Custer entries was Gunner Prior with a 109.
The Wildcats came in with a team score of 365, well ahead of second-place finishing St. Thomas More at 407.

Wildcats break Broncs in three

The Custer Wildcats girls volleyball team broke the Belle Fourche Broncs in three sets at home last Thursday to bring their season record to 2-3 on the new season. 
“We were very excited about our win over Belle Fourche and are happy to see the girls coming together as a team,” said co-head coach Jill Hohn. 
The ’Cats started out strong in the match at the Armory with a 25-14 win in the first set. Pulling ahead after a close start, Custer was able to capitalize on Belle’s mistakes and saw some strong team play.

Cheer team places fifth at Belle Fourche

A last-minute decision not to perform their pyramid may have cost them a higher placing but Custer High School competitive cheer team coach Tiffany Newman says she is pleased with her team’s performance at its first tournament of the season. 
The eight-member team traveled to Belle Fourche on Thursday to participate in its invitational competing against five other teams and placing fifth. 

XC squad runs well at Twilight

When the Custer cross country team travels up north to the Belle Fourche Invitational on Thursday it may seem like a walk in the park compared to their experience last week at the Augustana Twilight Cross Country Meet in Sioux Falls. 
After taking a nearly six-hour bus ride to the other side of the state on Friday, the team competed against 47 other high schools from six different states having to run at dusk and deal with distractions like hundreds of spectators taking video on their cell phones and loud music playing in the background.

Cross country ‘off to a good start’

“I was very pleased with where we started out,” said cross country coach Karen Karim of her varsity teams in their first outing at the Douglas Early Bird tournament on Friday. 
Senior Mallory Delmont came in second in the 5K race at Box Elder’s Prairie Ridge Golf Course with a time of 18:43.78 and four other Wildcat runners earned medals for finishing in the top 15. 
“They didn’t keep team scores at this first meet, but we we would have won it going away if they had,” said Karim, adding “That’s a nice start.”

One in the win column for volleyball

The Custer High School girls volleyball team started off its season with one win and two losses as it hosted the Custer Invitational Tournament on Friday and Saturday at the elementary and high school gyms. 
The victory came in the Wildcats’ third game of the tourney Saturday against Red Cloud. The Custer team won in three sets (25-17, 23-25 and 25-16). 

Mistakes costly in 42-28 loss

For 28 minutes last Friday night, the Custer High School football team gave one of the most revered high school football programs in the state of South Dakota all it wanted—and then some.
Custer led the visiting West Central Trojans 28-21 into the second half before being undone by some costly mistakes that allowed the Trojans to rattle off 21 unanswered points in the Trojans’ 42-28 win.
