­­10 years ago, 2011 — Even though special funding from the city, county and school for the school resource officer was eliminated, Custer County Sheriff Rick Wheeler said he would continue the program because he believed doing so was in the best interests of the community and the kids ... Water woes continued to plague the new elementary school. The school board approved  $85,000-$90,000 for a water collection gallery from which water could be pumped ... Work to install decorative street lights by mid-June came to a temporary halt due to adverse weather conditions.

Saturday, May 1
8:41 a.m.: A Deputy assisted other agencies by following a stolen car that traveled through Custer County and then into Pennington County. The driver of the car got spooked and eluded the dragnet, but the car was later recovered in Rapid City. Charges are pending on the suspect.
11:42 a.m.: Speeding muscle cars were seen on Hwy. 16…A, that is. Near Custer State Park. A deputy saw some but they were behaving.

­­10 years ago, 2011 — State tourism director Jim Hagen presened Mitch McLain with a pin in recognition of his work in portraying Gen. Custer at a tourism show. A Canadian participant in the show wrote to the state tourism department  about McLain. Hagen called it “one of the most complimentary letters ever received by the state” ... Custer County department heads were seeking 50 cent an hour raises for county employees in their 2012 budgets ...

Greetings! Things are picking up! Let me explain.  I’m going back to my rant about paying people not to work. Here’s what was happening. If you applied and were receiving state unemployment, the federal government automatically gave you an additional $300 per week. So, say you were receiving the state maximum of $414, the feds gave you an additional $300 for a total compensation of $714 per week tax free! Yep! So, the person who works for $20 per hour takes home $800 gross for a 40-hour week while the person on unemployment gets $714 tax free.

9:44 p.m.: A dog was running wild on Custer’s North Eighth Street. It ran away before anyone got there.
Saturday, April 24
The 911 Misdial of the Day: Kids at a west Custer motor hotel used the phone as a toy and ended up on the emergency line.
12:07 a.m.: A deputy checked a residence on Ghost Canyon Road west of Hermosa after a suspicious alarm call was received from there. Nothing funny appeared to be going on.

­­10 years ago, 2011 — Custer Community Health Services received a  $2.7 million U.S. Department of Agriculture rural development loan to expand the hospital. A fall groundbreaking was planned ... Custer School District was challenged to cut expenses, including spending $150,000 on new furniture for the elementary school. Several board members wanted to know if the furniture being discarded could still be used ... Custer and Fall River counties were discussing having a shared 4-H advisor.

Jim Simons to retire

Jim Simons, PT, supervisor of Rehabilitation Services at Monument Health Custer Hospital, has spent a lot of time working in Custer. Actually, that’s a bit of an understatement — he’s been working at the Custer Hospital for over 30 years.
“I’ve seen a lot of changes,” he said with a smile. “Monument Health brought a lot of stability to the Custer Hospital, and that was a really good thing.”
