On the weekend of our Custer High School non-traditional graduation, KOTA television interviewed a 1948 Sturgis High School graduate, who was part of another class which had no ceremony for her year. Why? The polio pandemic was devastating in 1948.

Friday, May 15
The 911 Misdial of Day: A person called from a Rapid City apartment complex asking for police assistance. As neither they nor the apartment complex were in Custer County the person was referred to another agency. 
12:26 a.m.: A deputy hit the bricks in downtown Custer, checking doors and snooping around the the area. No problems were found. 
3:45 a.m.: A possible drunk driver was reported on Hwy. 79 somewhere between Rapid City and Hermosa. No one was in position to intercept the vehicle.

Learning from the pandemic

If there is a bright side to the coronavirus pandemic, it may be this. The situation is providing local healthcare professionals and even medical students with unique opportunities to learn and put into practice new techniques for taking care of patients. 
Nicholas Wilde of Sioux Falls is a third-year medical student from the University of South Dakota (USD) who spent the last four weeks working at Custer Clinic helping out and observing as the clinic has undergone significant changes to its procedures due to COVID-19. 

Five seek seat on county commission

Two incumbents, two newcomers and one familiar face will greet voters on the ballot in the face for two seats on the Custer County Commission during this year’s June 2 primary.
All of the candidates are Republican, and no Democratic candidates filed, although Independent candidates still have time to file.

Friday, May 8
1:50 a.m.: A deputy patrolled the mean morning streets of Custer on foot. No one was about and everything was quiet. 
7:11 a.m.: A deputy checked on a Bluebell Lane resident after an emergency medical alert went off there. The person was fine and the alarm was false. 
8:35 a.m.: A white pickup was reportedly “all over the road” on Hwy.79, south of Hermosa. A deputy shadowed the motorized menace but saw no legal violations. 
11:53 a.m.: A deputy helped a motorist with a flat tire on Hwy. 79 near Lame Johnny Road. 

Communities rally to replace shuttered newspaper

A group of business leaders and volunteers with almost no journalism training or experience has banded together to launch a local weekly newspaper in Kingsbury County, where two weekly papers were closed April 1 due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Armed with only an untested business model and promises of help from unpaid volunteers — but steeled by a passion for their communities and a commitment to keeping people informed — the group plans to launch its new newspaper May 20.

Down the sinkhole

Three Custer cavers who have logged thousands of hours exploring and mapping caves around the country got to put their experience to a unique use recently. The trio were part of a group of Black Hills cavers who crawled down a massive sinkhole in a Black Hawk neighborhood to map the underground void that was endangering as many as a dozen homes in the subdivision. 

Four candidates seek two seats in the House

Four Republican candidates will square off in the June 2 primary election for the right to serve a two-year term representing District 30 in the S.D. House of Representatives. Two seats are available and no candidates have filed from other parties, which means the winner of the Republican primary will head to Pierre.
Among the candidates is incumbent Tim Goodwin of rural Hill City. Goodwin, 64, has been a District 30 representative for four years and seeks re-election so he can continue to represent the citizens of District 30 with Christian conservative values.
