The trial of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd May 25, 2020, started up this week after a jury was finally selected. Chauvin, a 19-year veteran of the police force, is charged with second and third-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of Floyd, a black man. Chauvin is white.
Floyd was arrested for allegedly passing a counterfeit $20 bill in a convenience store. He resisted arrest and complained to officers that he could not breathe. He said he was claustrophobic and struggled with officers who eventually took him to the ground.
