School welcomes new teachers

The Hill City School District has five new teachers this year including Brandi Sperle, Deidre Ortiz, Chuck Safrit, Laura Hagen and Travis Santistevan. 
Sperle is teaching first grade and said, “What I enjoy most is their excitement for learning. They are eager to learn more and do more every day.”
Originally, Sperle is from Wray, Colo., where she taught for four years. Then she married a South Dakotan and moved to Rapid City where she taught for the last 13 years. 

Annual quilt show comes to Hill City

The 24th annual Hill City  Quilt and Fiber Art show and sale is once again a jam-packed event suitable for young and old alike.
Three-hundred fifty quilts and almost 50 fiber arts pieces will be on display at the school district gymnasium as well as up and down Main Street.
Show coordinator Susan Sanders encourages people to make a day of it in Hill City.

LTC Lippman honored at bridge dedication

Family, friends and South Dakota dignitaries came together at St. Rose of Lima Community Hall last Saturday for a ceremony to properly honor U.S. Army LTC Gordon Joseph Lippman. A bridge sign dedicated to Lippman was unveiled and will be placed at the Spring Creek Bridge on Hwy. 16 just northeast of Hill City.

— Tractor enthusiasts from all over the United States spent time in Custer, Hill City and Keystone for the Black Hills Tractor Run, a three-day tractor cruise. This event takes place every two years, taking different routes each time. Twelve states were represented at this year’s event with Kentucky and Tennessee being the farthest people traveled from. In total 77 came. The event started in 2003 but didn’t really kick into gear completely until 2006.
