Children’s group focuses on community

A new children’s group in the Town of Keystone being led by Stacy Dean and Chris Miles is focused on community projects. 
Dean and Miles addressed the Keystone Town Board at its Sept. 1 meeting. The pair has been helping with the Keystone recreation program this summer and are now working with children weekly after school.
Dean and Miles are medical missionaries who approached the board about painting the propane tank outside of City Hall. 

New Celebrate Recovery student program starts

Celebrate Recovery has a program geared to help middle school and high school aged-students navigate the complexities and issues that accompany young adulthood in our changing times. The program is called “The Landing” and the Little White Church will launch its first season of meetings with two separate programs.

Archery tournament Saturday, Aug. 28

Those who live in the Black Hills have many opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors, and for those with an interest in archery an August tournament is scheduled to give them a chance to get outside and test their skills with a bow and arrow. 

Friends make money out of lemons

Two entrepreneurial children took advantage of the increased rally traffic to set up shop in Keystone this week. For the second year in a row 11-year-old Trey Sutherland and 12-year-old Taya Skogen sold lemonade and water to passersby in old Keystone.
 Last year the friends set up shop on Playhouse Road.
“We were trying to do lemonade at the end of our driveway,” said Sutherland. “And that didn’t work.” 
Rather than closing up shop for good, the pair relocated to just outside of the senior center in what has now become a rally tradition. 

School year nearing

With the roar of the motorcycles leaving the Black Hills at the end of the week, Hill City Schools are already preparing for another year of learning with excellence. Superintendent Blake Gardner has already been busy letting parents, teachers, educators and the community in on the dates and activities going on to prepare for the 2021-22 school year. 

Derby benefits Scouts

The Cub Scout Pack 10 Pinewood Derby attracted numerous racing fans to the Boys and Girls Club this past Sunday.

A total of 29 cars raced down the 32-foot long track trying to beat the track record of 2.6283 seconds held by Noah Doaty.

Rush Mountain Adventure Park donated passes for all Cub Scouts while Mangiamo donated pizzas for the event. Local businesses throughout the region donated items for the raffle.

Pinewood Derby this weekend

The fifth annual Pinewood derby is slated for March 21 at 4p.m. at the Hill City Boys and Girls Club.

The event is a fundraiser for Hill City Cub Scout Pack 10. It’s also an opportunity for cub scouts to earn a new rank.

“Cub scouts have to meet certain requirements,” says Carl Doaty. “One of them is to build something from scratch.”

The Pinewood Derby is a Cub Scout tradition dating back to the 1950s. Scouts are given a 7-inch long by two-inch wide wooden block they can design into a car.

Going to state

The Hill City Drama Department’s One-Act play group is going to state.

The group moves onto state after going up against six other schools in the regional competition. Hill City is one of two schools (the other being Custer) that advanced out of Regions to the Class A state competition.

Scouts deliver

This past weekend, the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts in Hill City wrapped up their Scouting for Food project in Hill City and Keystone.

The initiative was a great success with plenty of food donated for both the Hill City and Keystone food pantries.

In total, collecting food for both Hill City and Keystone, the Scouts were able to collect 231 pounds of food.

The food collected in Hill City will go to the food pantry at the Little White Church. Food collected in Keystone will go to the food pantry at the Keystone Senior Center.

High school ornaments on display in D.C.

Ornaments from Hill City High School will be on display with the 2020 National Christmas Tree display on the Ellipse in President’s Park in Washington, D.C.

Hill City High School is representing the state of South Dakota this year. The district said on Facebook that this was facilitated by teacher Chad Ronish.
