The Buffalo Love Event Saturday

The Buffalo Love Event put on by Vicki Barlean and James Ann Barlean is taking place Saturday, Sept. 2 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Gypsy Rose Studio. It will be held in an open house style so people can come and go as they please. 
Vicki and James Ann, a mother daughter duo, decided to put on this buffalo-centric art show and sale because they love buffalo. 
“My mom and I both have a lot of art that we dedicate to the buffalo,” said James Ann. 

Pit masters display skill at Wine, Brew & BBQ

This may be the season for barbecue at family picnics, county fairs and special events, but in Hill City last weekend, it was “over the top” barbecue as pit masters from all over the region came to test their skill at creating the best of the best at Wine, Brew & BBQ. Those who came to taste the meat at the sanctioned Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) event, now in its 11th year, were not disappointed as they stood in line to sample the mouth-watering fare.

Possibility of bringing EV charging stations to Hill City

Are electric vehicles (EV) part of the future of tourism? Does Hill City need more EV charging stations to remain a relevant destination for tourists? 
These questions and more were discussed at the EV Charging Stations meeting hosted by the Hill City Area Chamber of Commerce Aug. 24. The meeting was designed to give the public a quick overview of the topic as well as to provide resources and partners to help them move forward with plans to bring EV chargers to their businesses. 

District now debt free

The Hill City School District is now debt free, according to an announcement at the Hill City School Board meeting Aug. 14.
The district paid the last check to pay off debt, said business manager Cassandra Ott.
Superintendent Blake Gardner thanked the board by saying, it’s “been a long road.”

Reported oil in Spring Creek addressed

Did someone say oil spill? A post on Facebook regarding oil or fuel flowing in Spring Creek by Memorial Park along with a “strong smell” caused some stir in Hill City last week. 
According to city administrator Brett McMacken, the Hill City Fire Department, a deputy sheriff and the public works team responded Aug. 13. Unfortunately, it was already getting dark and it was difficult to see any oil.

11th annual Wine, Brew & BBQ Friday, Saturday

The Wine, Brew & BBQ is back in Hill City for its 11th year. In a few days, 25 professional BBQ teams of “Pit Masters” from South Dakota, Texas, Wyoming, Colorado, Iowa and Minnesota will converge in Hill City. They are competing for a prize package of $10,000 with championships in chicken, pork ribs, pork butt and brisket. 
There will also be 30 judges from the Kansas City Barbecue Society (KSCB) coming from all over the United States to judge the events. 

Harney Street lot discussion put to rest

The Harney Street Lot discussion is over, at least for the time being. Keystone Town Board trustees voted down a motion to move the city public works staging lot to the sewer plant at the Aug. 16 town board meeting. 
Trustee Matt Fullilove brought the motion up saying, “we spent a lot of time on this,” and urging fellow board members to move the city lot up the road saying it was in the best interest of old Keystone.

Second annual Rubber Duck Race Sept. 2

Looking for one last weekend of summer fun? The second annual Hill City Lions Club (HCLC) Rubber Duck Race, Carnival and Craft/Vendor Fair is Saturday, Sept. 2 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Memorial Park off old Hill City Road. 
The idea of putting on a rubber duck race was brought to the HCLC last year. 

Holy Terror Days makes a return

Holy Terror Days is coming back to Keystone and businesses and residents are encouraged to volunteer and participate.
Keystone Area  Chamber of Commerce director Robin Pladson saidd a small group of people were excited to bring the event back and combine it with the hometown celebration to make it something special.

“It’s been a rollercoaster week,” said Dale Householder, president of the Hill City Senior Center. “We’ve had days that have been better than average, and we’ve had quite a few days below average. But overall, we’re going to surpass what we did last year, and that’s a huge success.”
