Our voices were heard!  
Again, big thanks to all of you who were proactive on stopping the campground in Custer State Park.  We were united in putting forth a successful effort to keep this wonderful wildlife park the gem that it is.

Welcome back to the parade, candy

Just in case you missed it, toward the end of last week’s story on the Custer City Council meeting, the council unanimously voted to amend its application for parade participation in the city by allowing candy to once again be thrown from parade floats, whether it be Gold Discovery Days, July 4, etc. The amendment was made at the request of the Custer Area Chamber of Commerce, and we applaud the chamber for requesting it and the city council for allowing this common sense and fun measure back into our parades.

I like lists. They are how I keep track of everything from shopping to tasks to scheduling plans. Sometimes my lists backfire though. Because while they are a useful way to keep track of things, they also act as a constant reminder of everything I need to do and everything I still haven’t done.

I second that motion.
The motion I’m referring to is Jason’s column, “Time to make COVID-19 endemic” in our Jan. 19 edition. Like him, I am sick and tired of the pandemic and even more so the authoritarianism, mandates and media hysteria, censorship and disinformation surrounding it.

Greetings! Hear ye, hear ye: Custer State Park campgrounds second edition.  Since writing last week about the 176 campsites to be constructed at the start of the Wildlife Loop, a lot has changed. First off, Gov. Kristi Noem listened to you and has agreed that this is not a good plan. My hat is off to Gov. Noem because she believes in listening to the citizens of South Dakota. Wow! Now that shows the character of this lady.

First of all, I want to thank you for rallying to my call for input on the Custer State Park project. Last week I reached out to many of you and asked the question, what are your feelings about the initial proposal from Game Fish and Parks for the 175 campsites at the Wildlife Loop location and then to the revised proposal of 66 campsites at the Stockade Lake location?

A proposal for a new 176-site campground at Custer State Park sounds like it is dead on arrival when it is heard by committee at this year’s legislative session, and we must say, we are glad that is the case.
“With the amount of negativity from all walks of life in South Dakota, I highly doubt this bill will make it out of committee and on to the Appropriations committee where it will end up if passed,” Charlie Hoffman, R-Eureka, told Keloland News in an email.

Fairness in girls’ sports matters

When the 2022 legislative session kicked off, I presented my State of the State address to the people of South Dakota. I described how South Dakota is stronger than it has ever been in its 133-year history. This did not happen because of what government did. It happened because of what government did not do. To preserve what we have and grow even stronger, we need to remember why government exists in the first place – to protect the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Greetings! Well, what should we talk about? Hmmm. How about House Bill 1048? Trust me, I’ll have this bill number in my head for a long, long time! What’s it about? Game, Fish, and Parks (GF&P) has asked for a $10 million appropriation to build 175 new campsites in Custer State Park.  

Getting thrown under the bus

I often think about many of the idiomatic expressions we use here in North America.
Most countries have them. You may hear “have a go” or “you’re being bloody cheeky.” Here in the States we use the expression “being thrown under the bus.”
Have you ever been? Not literally of course. But figuratively?
