Local writer wins another Emmy

If you looked closely in the audience at last Sunday’s Emmy Award presentations at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, you may have spotted Jill Twiss from Custer. You can be sure her parents, John and Jackie did.
Jill and the other “Late Week Tonight with John Oliver” HBO show writers won their fourth consecutive Emmy  in the “Writing For A Variety Series” category.
Finalists for the award were Saturday Night Live, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Late Night with Seth Meyers, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee and Documentary Now.

Brown inducted

Dick Brown of Custer joined his wife, Sue, a 2008 inductee into the S.D. Hall of Fame, Sept. 14 when he was also inducted.
In his remarks at the ceremony, he said the honor affirmed a “historic family legacy forged by generations with shared values of making a difference — by the lives we live and in the lives of others — through philanthropy, stewardship of our natural resources and ‘service above self’ through public leadership.”

Disaster drill comes true, almost

A 2018 Custer County emergency management disaster drill turned out to be almost prophetic over the weekend when three horses spooked by a hiker in Custer State Park (CSP) threw their riders, necessitating a call to Search and Rescue.
A practice drill conducted in May of last year in CSP was based on a fictitious scenario in which a group of horseback riders are surprised by four-wheeler riders illegally riding on the trail. 

4-H members win big at state fair

The 911 Misdial of the Day: An extremely distraught male from another state called to report a dead baby deer was lying in the driveway of an office on North 5th Street in Custer. He said he was upset that some children might see it. It was not clear what made the incident 911-line-worthy. 

BHE opens operations center

Black Hills Energy (BHE) cut the ribbon on its new $2.5 million Southern Hills Operations Center on the west side of Custer last Wednesday. Officials say the new heated shop, expanded office and outdoor storage yard will help the company better serve customers throughout the lower Black Hills service area. 
The open house at the new facility featured refreshments, service truck bucket rides, electrical safety demonstrations and tours of the building, as well as speeches from local officials and BHE representatives. 

Fall comes early to French Creek

Within a week of the Aug. 2 flood, many trees along the French Creek corridor in downtown Custer started to look sickly and today many are nearly bare of leaves, looking more like the end of October than early September. 
In the opinion of certified arborist Taylor Gust of Rushmore Tree and Turf, the reason could be that the trees received a knockout “one-two punch” in this unusually wet year.

New pastor at Grace Family Fellowship

Early this spring Pastor Mike Brennan of Rapid City had wrapped up 15 years of ministry on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and thought he might never pastor another church again.
Then he got a call to preach one Sunday at Custer’s Grace Family Fellowship. The next week he moved to Custer as the church’s full-time pastor. 
“We’re just thrilled to be there,” said Brennan in a phone interview. “We love the people. I probably wouldn’t have taken another church if it wasn’t for the people and their attitude toward doing church.”

Connections key to artist’s success

Cait Irwin showed up to make a book presentation to Custer Elementary School last week in a shirt and pants splotched with dozens of different paint colors, which was entirely appropriate because the book she was presenting contained illustrations painted by Irwin herself. 
Irwin, who is currently working as the artist-in-residence at Sylvan Lake Lodge, came in her everyday work clothes to present a copy of the new book “The Secret Life of Phil” to principal Barb Paulson for the school library.
