Black Elk Fire burns 7.6 acres

Firefighters will continue to monitor the burn area of the Black Elk Fire that was first reported July 22 afternoon in the Black Elk Wilderness. The fire burned 7.6 acres and is 100 percent contained.
Due to its containment, a number of resources were demobilized late last week. A 20-person hand crew, a National Guard Blackhawk Helicopter and a rapid extraction module remained in the area and continued to work through the weekend.
The emergency closure order for Black Elk Wilderness put in place for public and wildland firefighter safety was lifted July 25. The public is asked not to go into the burned area as hazards still remain. Temporary flight restrictions were put in place restricting aircraft, but were later lifted.
“I am grateful for the efforts of our firefighters, our partners who assisted with the fire effort and the cooperation of the public allowing the firefighters to quickly respond and contain this fire. The Black Elk Wilderness is an incredible gem enjoyed by our visitors as well as our local communities. I am thankful for all the assistance and cooperation” said Tracy Anderson, Hell Canyon District Ranger.
The fire burned in heavy dead and downed timber in steep and remote terrain. Cause of the fire is a lightning strike from July 20.
