The independently produced western horror movie, part of which was filmed in the Custer area, is finally coming to the big screen this week and will get its Black Hills premier showing as the filmmakers had hoped.
Film director Chris Canfield of Rapid City announced to participants in the making of “Blackwood” last week that the movie will make its hometown debut at the Elks Theatre in downtown Rapid City this Friday at 6:30 p.m. Tickets will be available in advance.
Canfield also said the movie will be shown at the State Theatre in Sioux Falls the same day. Other theatrical showings are scheduled for Los Angeles, Denver, Oklahoma City, Cleveland, Kansas City and at several locations in Arizona.
The following Tuesday, July 26, the movie will begin its run on a number of satellite and cable platforms including Xfinity (Comcast), DIRECTV, AT&T U-verse, Cox, Charter/Time Warner, Verizon, Frontier and several smaller regional providers.
“Blackwood” will also be available digitally on Apple TV, iTunes, Prime Video (Amazon), VUDU, Google Play/YouTube Movies, Microsoft Movies & TV and Redbox On Demand.
Filmed entirely in the Black Hills in the second half of 2019, “Blackwood” tells the story of a Native American woman who, while evading the notorious Dutch Wilder Gang, unknowingly awakens an ancient ravenous creature known as The Wendigo in the uncharted Black Woods Forest.
Opening scenes for the film were shot at Four Mile Old West Town west of Custer during a week in September of 2019 and several local residents served as background actors in the movie.
