Kent Keidel and Jason Bradeen are the two candidates for a contested one -year term on the Elk Mountain School District Board of Education in Tuesday’s Primary Election.
Keidel has lived in the Elk Mountain School District for more than seven years. He is a retired substitute teacher who has over 15 years in education, with the last three in special education. He ran for a board position last year and was appointed to fill a one-year term.
“I have always felt an obligation to contribute something to the community in which I live and found this a very rewarding way to do it,” Keidel said.
Keidel said although this is his first time serving on a school board, he is no stranger to school board meetings, and finds listening to topics that are brought tot he board to be interesting and challenges him to not only think, but often compromise.
“I bring an open mind and reasoning to the board,” he said.
Keidel said there are many issues facing the board in the coming years, including always keeping students in mind and bringing the best diverse education possible to them, which can be a challenge at a small school.
Rising costs are beginning to be a problem for school districts as well, he said, and the influx of families from all over the country requires thought when selecting education plans, he said.
“If elected, I will always have our students in mind,” he said.
Keidel said he enjoys working with the children and filling in when necessary, saying he has taught all grades from kindergarten through 12th.
“I believe I am a well-rounded and good-natured individual who works well with students and staff, bringing this to board as well,” he said. “I will always take the time from my busy life to help out where I can. I am always available to discuss any issue with anyone.”
Bradeen did not respond to phone calls and emails requesting he fill out a candidate questionnaire.
