Hey you, the Custer High School basketball fan who is reading this editorial: We have another CHS team that is well worth your attention. That team is the Custer Wildcat wrestling team.
Head coach Jared Webster and his staff have done an incredible job of building the Custer program that waxed and waned throughout the years and for many years took very much of a back seat to the boys, and even the girls, basketball teams. This year the team takes a back seat to no team, however, as Webster and his team have created a monster that very much has a chance to bring home some serious hardware from the state wrestling meet next month and go down as the greatest Custer team in school history.
Unlike the basketball teams, you have limited chances to see the wrestling team in person, unless you travel to one of the road meets. The Wildcats opened the season with some home meets, but will be back at home Thursday night for the final time when they host a triangular against Douglas-New Underwood-Rapid City Christian and Chadron, Neb. It’s an excellent opportunity for Wildcat fans to pack the Armory and give the Wildcat wrestlers the support they have so richly earned. There is plenty of room on the bandwagon!
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the team, we can catch you right up. The Wildcats wrestle in Class B, and are fielding a full lineup. Within that lineup is a handful of dynamite wrestlers who are among the top-ranked kids in the state in their weight class. Among those who are in the top 10 in their weight class are:
• Tyler Trant at 106 pounds - sixth
• Tray Weiss at 113 pounds - first
• Landon Woodward at 126 pounds - sixth
• Riley Scott at 132 pounds - ninth
• Jonathan Lewis at 160 pounds - third
• Ryder Bailey at 170 pounds - seventh
• Parker Noem at 182 pounds - fourth
• Zayne Severyn at 285 pounds - eighth
What makes this list even more exciting is there are only two seniors in those rankings. That bodes well for the future of the program, meaning this season isn’t a one-off. The program is set well for the future, and no doubt the little wrestlers coming up through the youth program will want to carry on the tradition.
Yes, Custer has long been a basketball town and has a storied history in the hardcourt. However, the wrestling program has had its fair share of success over the years, and is once again very much a program on the rise. Congratulations, Wildcat wrestlers, and keep up the great work.
