CHS graduation is Saturday

More than a month after Custer High School’s senior class was supposed to walk across the stage and receive their diplomas to culminate their high school careers, Custer seniors will finally get that chance when graduation is held at Wildcat Field this Saturday at 2 p.m.

Students will be seated in the stands and the initial plan was for seats for guests to be marked and spaced to adhere to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines and a limit to how many people can attend. However, with the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions within the city, which was passed by the Custer County Council Monday evening, there will no longer be a limit as to how many people can attend. Those who attend will still need to bring their own chairs and guests will be located on the football field/track. People are also still free to follow and are encouraged to follow CDC social distancing guidelines.

Custer High School principal Orion Thompson, superintendent Mark Naugle and school board members will hand out diplomas.

The event will start with the processional, followed by the national anthem and a welcome from Naugle.

Student speakers are Anna Marie Riner, who will deliver the speech “Choosing What Defines Us,” followed by Danny Nelson’s speech “Crazy Wildcat Seniors.”

Adult speakers are recently retired administratiave assistant Jan Wilson and Chet Herman.

The speakers will be followed by the senior slide show and announcement of honors. The seniors will then receive their diplomas.

Riner is class valedictorian, while Justus Kramer is salutatorian. Class motto is “We are like stars; we shall shine even after we are gone.” Class song is “Home” by Phillip Phillips, class colors are gold, silver and black and the class flower is the white tiger lily.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the Armory.
