The Easter Sunrise Celebration at Mount Rushmore National Memorial will return for its 78th year at the Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center amphitheater, April 5 at 7 a.m.
Long before the sun illuminates the granite faces of Mount Rushmore, hundreds of locals and visitors alike will gather before dawn, braving the cool spring temperatures to celebrate the resurrection Easter morning. The gathering grants a front row seat to the sun rising over the mountain and offers a moment of reflection in a setting that blends natural beauty, national history and spiritual significance.
“Be prepared to meet a lot of nice people and start springtime with a unique experience at Mount Rushmore,” said John Esposti from the Keystone Congregational Church of Keystone.
The hour-long, non-denominational service features scripture readings and prayer by clergy from surrounding churches and a selection of traditional hymns and contemporary praise music performed by local musicians.
“Really amazing musicians,” according to Danny Martinez from The Little White Church. The service is closed out with the patriotic singing of “God Bless America.”
While weather conditions can very from brisk spring temperatures to South Dakota snow, the event has maintained a steady following, with many attendees returning year after year. It is recommended to dress in warm layers, including a hat and gloves as well as bringing a blanket to insulate from the cold amphitheater seating.
It is encouraged to arrive early in order to park and walk to the amphitheater. No golf cart or other services are available for transportation from the parking lot so plan ahead to bring wheelchairs, walkers, strollers or wagons as necessary. Parking is free for those who arrive before 7:15 a.m.
All proceeds collected from the offering are donated to local charities. This year’s recipients will be The Cornerstone Rescue Mission and Love INC Hill City-Keystone.
Sunrise Choir member Judy Dalton extended an invitation, “We just encourage you to come and enjoy the beautiful day and celebrate that Christ has risen.”
