Gregory Brose
Gregory Ryan Brose passed away peacefully from the effects of an unexpected cardiac arrest March 23, 2025, at Monument Hospital in Rapid City, S.D., surrounded by his loving family. He was 48 years young.
Greg was born Oct. 13, 1976, in Wilmington, Ohio, to Marvin “Greg” and Peggy (Cloud) Brose. In 1987 his family moved to Mississippi. He attended Tishomingo County High School in Iuka, Miss.
He loved all sports and excelled at anything he set his mind to. After high school he went back to Ohio where he studied Ju-Jitsu and competed in a world match in Ireland, taking home two gold, two silver and one bronze medal.
Later, he ventured off to Colorado where he developed a love for carpentry which would lead him to a successful career as a master carpenter. He befriended many in the industry, sharing skills and stories and gaining the nickname “Huck’ along the way.
He was blessed with his first daughter Kaia in 1998; she would become his rock, and he was hers. In 2004 he was introduced to Betsy (Brownell) at a Food and Wine Classic in Aspen, Colo. It was love at first sight and soon they became the best of friends. Together they explored the endless mountain passes and breathtaking views of Colorado—this was his happy place.
In May 2011 Greg completed the Colorado Law Enforcement Training Academy at Colorado Mountain College in Glenwood Springs, meeting all the requirements to serve as a fully authorized peace officer. During this time he was presented with a Heartsaver Hero Award for his courage and swift action he took to save a man’s life, utilizing the CPR skills he had acquired. Greg was a remarkable shooter, participating in various IDPA and USPA pistol shooting competitions throughout the U.S., a passion he shared closely with his dad.
Greg moved to Hill City, S.D. in 2013, and in 2014 he and Betsy married and were blessed with their youngest daughter Lily (who he nicknamed “Poods.”) Greg had enormous love for his family. He loved being a dad and was by far one of the best; he loved nothing more than being with them, teaching, playing and making them happy—the word ‘no’ was not in his dictionary, as Lily calls it.
Greg’s infectious smile and sense of humor made doing even the most mundane tasks amusing. He was an early riser, worked hard and strove for perfection in everything he did; every job, no matter how big or small, was important. Brose Construction, LLC was a reputable name you could count on and one he was proud of. Anything his hands touched would be complemented.
He expected nothing yet gave a lot. He was smart, handsome, embraced a challenge, loved learning and sharing his knowledge with others and enjoyed conversation. He was a self-taught musician, having played classical guitar but most recently taking up piano, playing intricate pieces as if he was some sort of concert virtuoso. He was determined, goal-oriented and steadfast.
Greg will be missed immensely, but his infectious smile and moments we’ve been so fortunate to share with him will live forever in our hearts.
He leaves behind his beloved wife Betsy, who will love him always; daughters, Kaia (Vermillion, S.D.) and Lily (Hill City) who will forever look up to him; his dear sweet grandma, Beverly Cloud (Lynchburg, Ohio); proud parents Greg and Peggy Brose and witty younger brother Eric Brose (Iuka, Miss.); older brother Michael Brose (Corinth, Miss.); many nieces and nephews, including one special nephew, Dylan Brose; and our sprightly pup, Buddy.
Please join us for a Celebration of Greg’s Life on Saturday, May 10 at 11 a.m. at the outdoor pavilion at the Community Lutheran Church in Hill City.
In lieu of flowers, any monetary donations will go to support the future endeavors of his two daughters, his true joy.
