Hill City to celebrate July 4

No one could have predicted it. But planners hoped for it.
Hill City packed end to end with visitors and locals from Hill City and the entire surrounding Black Hills area (and beyond) who came to celebrate the Independence Day Holiday—and stayed for the entire day’s roster of events.
“Hill City’s First Star Spangled Saturday exceeded our wildest hopes and expectations,” said Janet Wetovick-Bily, executive director, Hill City Area Chamber of Commerce.  
“Seeing our parade entrants lined up and flag-waving visitors on Main Street the length of the entire town, happy smiles, 55 pies donated by our churches, singing,  a salute to the flag and children enjoying games on the lawn at the Visitor Information Center—it was a day to remember,” she said.
And one that’s about to be repeated.
For the second year in a row, a core planning team that includes the mayor, city and chamber team members, dedicated volunteers, community organizations, businesses and residents have planned a day’s worth of events at various locations in Hill City.
The day kicks off with a  pancake feed, followed by a craft show, a flag-waving parade, children’s games, a show-n-shine and an old-fashioned pie and ice cream social featuring The Shrine of Democracy Barbershop Chorus, afternoon music by JJ Kent and a Civilian Conservation Corp open house on the lawn of the Visitor Information Center.
The day ends with a free evening screening of “National Treasure II” at Hill City’s newly remodeled Hill City Center on Railroad Ave.
Hill City’s businesses join the celebration and help swag the town in old-fashioned bunting.
