Kenneth Schmitz

Kenneth “Ken” Nick Schmitz was born September 10, 1948, in Kenmare, N.D., to Leo and Evelyn (Ackerman) Schmitz.
Ken was first and foremost a family man. He deeply loved his family, especially his children and grandchildren.
Ken always stayed connected and in the know regarding events, milestones and achievements. He would proudly share the successes of his family to anyone who would listen. He thoroughly enjoyed his walks in nature around his beloved home of Custer, S.D.
Ken befriended a cat he named Lucky and though many never got to see him, Lucky was a faithful companion. It was well known Ken enjoyed good food, especially a hearty breakfast, Susan’s lasagna, black coffee, making lists, ketchup, Denver Broncos, diet coke, candy (especially from MaryAnn’s candy dish). He possessed a dry and irreverent sense of humor. He never met a stranger, and anyone that spent time with Ken felt his sincerity. He was a kind and caring man who was always willing to lend a helping hand. He will be deeply missed.
Ken, of Custer, SD, passed away Jan. 27, 2023, at his home in Custer. He was 74.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and sister.
Ken is survived by his children, Susan Schmitz-Garrett (Joseph) of Fountain, Colo., and Adrian John “A.J.” Schmitz (Jennifer) of Littleton, Colo.; brothers, Paul Schmitz (MaryAnn) of Custer, Dale Schmitz (Pat) of Broomfield, Colo., Darld Schmitz (Joyce) of Bismarck, N.D., and Curt Schmitz of Custer; grandchildren, Shannon Garrett of Fountain, Colo., James Garrett of Castle Rock, Colo., Benjamin Schmitz of Watertown, Wis., Grace Schmitz of Milwaukee, Wis., Stephen Schmitz of Pensacola, Fla., Kate Garrett of Fountain, Luke Schmitz of Littleton and Anne Schmitz of Littleton; six nieces and four nephews; and many, many cousins, aunts and uncles.
