Michael Murray

Michael Travis Murray was born Nov. 26, 1995, in Rapid City, S.D., to Peter and Dawn (Kainz) Murray.    
He grew up in Custer, S.D., loving animals, sports and the outdoors.  He attended Custer High School where he played football and wrestled.  He enjoyed cooking and writing.
After graduating Michael left to fulfill his dream of being a Marine. He proudly served in the U.S. Marines with 2/6 Golf Co. until his honorable discharge with the rank of corporal in 2018.
Michael, of Longmont, Colo, passed away Jan. 15, 2023. He was 27.
He was preceded in death by his great-grandfather, Charles Kayl of Gregory, S.D.; grandfathers, Greg Murray of Seal Rock, Ore, and Dean Kainz of Custer;  uncle, Travis Kainz of Custer; and cousin Zachary Nicks, of Vermillion, S.D.
Michael is survived by his parents, Peter and Dawn Murray of Custer; daughter, Adalyn Rae; brother, Alex (Stephanie) Murray and nieces Madison and Samantha of Brookings, S.D.; sisters, Taarna Murray of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., and Victoria “Torrie” Murray of Norfolk, Va.; grandmother, Margie Kainz of Custer; great-grandmother, Jean Kayl of Gregory; uncle, Andrew (Leah) and cousins, Blake and  Addison Kainz of Custer; aunts, Renee and cousin Amber Nicks of  Bloomfield, Neb., and Lareina (Andrew) and cousins Taylor, Ryan and Jacob Curtis-Wellings of Austin, Texas; and many extended family members and friends.

Christian Funeral will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 27 at St John the Baptist Catholic Church in Custer.
Christian Committal will be at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 27, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, S.D., with military honors presented.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home in Custer.
