Rangers rocket forward at Black Hills Track Classic

The Hill City Rangers made some impressive achievements at the Black Hills Track Classic at Woodle Field in Sturgis April 30. According to head coach Joe Noyes, the athletes had 27 personal records and seven seasonal records. 
“The kids competed extremely well despite the wind and slightly cooler temps,” said Noyes. “It was a really great day.”
In the 100 meter run, Alaina Dean came in fifth at 13.16, and Jacie Devries finished eighth at 13.41, both with personal records. The girls kept up the pace in the 200 with Devries in third at 28.03, Dean in fifth at 28.19 and Abby Siemonsma in seventh at 28.29. Dean raced again in the 400 meter run, clocking in at 1:02.84 in third place. Close behind her was Sara DuBois in fifth with a time of 1:04.35.
During the 800 meter run, Abby Cutler raced across the finish line in second place with a time of 2:26.80. Finally, in the 3200 meter run, Natalie Hanka achieved third place at 12:51.81. 
During the relays, the Ranger girls scored eighth place three times. In the 400 relay Maycie Weaver, Zoe Alexander, Cheyanne Burke and Kylee Alexander finished with a time of 57.66. Then, in the 800 relay Burke, Devries, Anna Dean and Weaver got a combined time of 1:57.96. Finally, in the medley relay, Weaver, Burke, Zoe and Paiton Flick finished with a time of 5:25.98. 
For the 1600 relay, DuBois, Alaina Dean, Lillie Ross and Siemonsma teamed up. They finished in third place with a time of 4:21. Then in the 3200 relay, Ross, DuBois, Jaelyn Peters and Cutler came in second place, clocking in at 10:17.30. 
When it came to the 300 meter hurdles, Siemonsma achieved sixth at 52.46 with Anna Dean directly after her in seventh at 53.28. Then, in shot put, Whitney Edwards finished in eighth with a distance of 31-7, and Cassidy Moody came in 10th with a distance of 31-2. Finally, in discus Edwards achieved a personal record and fourth place at 106-5. Meanwhile, Moody made a seasonal record and sixth place at 101. 
According to Noyes, “They just went out there and pushed themselves, and I think they were rewarded.”
William Walther ran especially well in the sprints. In the 100 Walther finished in sixth place with a time of 11.62. He then scored fourth in the 200 meter run, clocking in at 23.50. Then, Walther finished third with a time of 52.37 during the 400 meter run. 
Next, in the 800 meter run, Brandon Escalante achieved a personal record and ninth place with a time of 2:11.15. Devin Buehler was directly after him in 10th place with a time of 2:14.11. After that, the Ranger boys lined up for the 1600 meter run with Luke Rupert coming in fourth at 4:49.51, Brandon Ramirez in sixth at 4:56.07 and Leighton Aves in ninth at 4:58.56.
The Ranger boys had a string of high scores during the relays as well. Aidan Voorhees, Daniel Hernandez, Jerrad Hislop and Alexander Stoeckmann teamed up for the 400 relay and came in eighth place at 50.36. Then, in the 800 relay, Voorhees, Hernandez, Zephaniah Martinez and Stoeckmann came in fifth with a time of 1:43.81. During the 1600 relay, Grayson Rahn, Eli Isakson, Martinez and Ramirez finished fourth at 3:55.34. Finally, in the 4x800 relay Buehler, Escalante, Ramirez and Aves placed second with a time of 8:43.12. 
When it came to the hurdles, Rahn placed ninth for both the 110 meters at 18.40 and the 300 meters at 45.28. In discus, Tanner Davis placed sixth at 123-10. Then, in the high jump Buehler placed fifth at 5-6, and Isaac Dean placed ninth in the triple jump at 35-6 1/2
“We’re a week away from the conference meet,” said Noyes. “So to be doing these things now has me really encouraged that hopefully we’re set up for our best performance yet.
As a whole, the coaches are really proud of how the kids are working and the time they are putting in.” 
Next up, 15 Ranger athletes will compete at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays Friday, May 6. On Saturday, May 7 the other 30 students will competing at the Gas & Go Track and Field Invitational at the Kadoka Area Sports Complex.
