What is truck blockade accomplishing?

As you read this, police in Canada may still be working to clear truckers and other protestors who have used semis and sometimes farm equipment to block the downtown core of Ottawa, Canada’s capital, as well key Canadian-U.S. access points at Emerson, Manitoba, and Pembina, N.D., as well as at the Coutts access point between Alberta and Montana.
The blockades were created by truckers who oppose Canada’s new rule requiring them to be fully vaccinated when crossing the Canadian-U.S. border or face a two-week quarantine. Their “Freedom Convoy” has since been joined by others who detest other COVID-19 measures, whether it’s mask mandates, lockdowns or restrictions on gatherings.
Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau has said many of those protesting do not represent the “roughly 90 percent” of truckers who the Canadian government says have been vaccinated against COVID-19. And while much of the country may be tired of COVID-19 restrictions, Trudeau said, the pandemic is not over and “we are going to continue to follow the science and do what is necessary to keep Canadians safe.”
We have written in this space ad naseum how tired we are of the pandemic. Who isn’t? We have also written about how we are not  fan of vaccine mandates. It’s a slippery slope when someone is allowed to tell you what you must put into your body.
Having said that, we aren’t sure what this blockade is accomplishing, other than snarling traffic and adding to already terrible supply chain issues. Yes, they are protesting, and they are doing so peacefully. Both of those are allowed. What isn’t allowed, however, is blocking roadways, emergency routes, etc. That’s dangerous, and shouldn’t be tolerated, no matter who is doing the blocking.
It seems many people who support the truckers are the same ones who post “all lives splatter” memes when left-leaning activists lock hands or sit down at an intersection for their cause celebre. “Get out of the road!” “People are tying to get to work!” “You’re blocking emergency vehicles!” We fail to see how one protest is different or more valuable than the other. If you are in favor of the blockades only when you’re in favor of the cause, that’s hypocritical.
We’re either all-in on allowing blockades, or we’re not. It’s not right to pick and choose which blockades are allowable and which aren’t based on your political leanings. That’s one of the reasons this country is so divided: rules for thee and not for me.
We don’t like it when activists block highways for any reasons, be it BLM, truckers or whomever. We didn’t like it when Seattle extremeists took over several city blocks for their “Summer of Love.” People that drive the roads don’t do so for political reasons. They are vaccinated, unvaccinated, pro-BLM, anti-BLM. Take your pick. They are just trying to get to the store, get their medicine or get to work.
This is not a partisan issue. Stop blocking roads as a part of  protest. Blocking roads is unproductive, it’s silly, it’s dangerous and it’s inconsiderate of other people’s time.
