The Region 4A girls golf tournament was held last Tuesday at Meadowbrook golf course in Rapid City. Out of five placing teams, Custer came out second overall with a score of 411. They were behind St. Thomas More (STM), whose team scored 359. Coming in third, fourth and fifth were Belle Fourche, Hot Springs and Lead-Deadwood, respectively.
“Everybody had a pretty good day. Overall, I was really happy with it,” said head coach Hailey Uphoff.
As for individual scores, Ryan Horning of STM was the best golfer of the tournament, earning first place with just 76 strokes. The top Wildcat golfer at regions was Jordyn Uphoff, who placed sixth with 96 strokes. The low score was thanks to “an awesome back nine,” said Uphoff.
Just four strokes behind was Shuana Zacher, who earned a 10th place finish for the Wildcats with a score of 101. Amber Layton followed closely behind, earning 12th place with 102. Rounding out the Wildcats roster were Quinn Lewison and Lauryn Robb, who scored the 16th and 17th-place spots, respectivley, with 111 and 113 strokes.
The team’s ball striking has been going well, said coach Uphoff, but is still “getting a feel for the speeds of their greens,” something they have been working on for much of the season. Looking ahead to the upcoming end of the season, Uphoff says that they are looking to meet some of their individual and team goals, which they have been setting based on past scores at state meets and scores from Meadowbrook Golf Course, where state will be held.
“We’re thankful to have a West River state tournament,” said Uphoff. By the time they compete at state, they will already have seen the course multiple times.
“If they can all just play their best golf, we’ll be happy,” said Uphoff.
The girls also competed at the Douglas Invitational on Tuesday. They will compete again at Meadowbrook Golf Course May 30, the last regular season tournament of the year before State at the same course June 5-6.
