It was a strong week of golf for the Custer High School golf team last week, as it won its own home golf meet last Friday at Rocky Knolls Golf Course while taking a second place at a meet the previous day.
The Wildcats continued a trend of taking turns being the best golfer at a meet at the Custer meet when freshman Ryder Bailey was the top scorer for Custer, shooting a round of 82, which was good for a second-place finish at the meet.
Dustyn Fish was the second Wildcat to place in the top 10, as he finished in fourth place with a score of 86, while Gunner Prior came in 10th with a round of 92. Other Wildcat scores were Matthew Merrill at 98 and Ethan Lappe at 121.
Lance Christensen of Little Wound was the tournament medalist with a score of 72.
One stroke proved to be the difference in the team race as Custer won the meet with a score of 358, edging out St. Thomas More, which finished at 359.
Last Thursday the Wildcats were in Box Elder for the Douglas Invitational where they placed second as a team, losing to first place Rapid City Stevens by only two strokes, 371-373.
Fish finished in fourth place at the meet with an 84, while Bailey also placed in the top 10, placing seventh at 90. Prior finished at 95, while Merrill fired a 104 and Ethan Lappe finished at 129.
Brandon Drumm of Rapid City Stevens was medalist at the meet at 73.
The Wildcats will be at home for the final time Friday when they host a triangular at Rocky Knolls Golf Course, which will be attended by Belle Fourche and Lead-Deadwood. The meet will begin at 2 p.m.
Monday the team begins postseason play when it heads to the Black Hills Conference Meet, which will be played at Southern Hills Golf Course in Hot Springs. It is the first of three consecutive postseason meets to be played in Hot Springs, as both the Region 4A meet and the Class A state meet are also scheduled at Southern Hills Golf Course.
Monday’s conference meet is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start.
