Wildcats wrap up golf season
The Custer High School Wildcats claimed 12th place as a team at the South Dakota High School Activities Association Class A Girls State Golf Championship June 2-3 at the Madison Country Club.
Coach Haley Uphoff said, “Nobody shot the scores that they were hoping to, but it’s a lot of pressure. I know, as seniors, they really were hoping to shoot their goals, and sometimes that pressure can be a little much, especially in a tournament like that.”
It was a difficult course as well, according to coach Uphoff.
“I thought the girls did well. I was happy with the way they played. They had some really good things that they did and some holes that they struggled on. That’s just golf,” coach Uphoff said.
For the senior girls, Shauna Zacher led the Wildcats, tying for 42nd with a score of 101 in round one and 96 in round two. Jordyn Uphoff was next in 68th. She scored 115 in round one and 113 in round two. Quinn Lewison tied for 69th, with a 112 in round one and 119 in round two. Then, Julianna Uphoff placed 80th, scoring 129 in round one and 130 in round two.
Lyncoln Robb, the state team’s only junior, came in 82nd with a 139 in round one and round two.
With that, the season is over, and the girls are off to their next adventures. Coach Uphoff said it was a special year because of how close the group was.
“Every tournament was fun, and they made a lot of memories on the trips and during the tournaments with people from other teams that they played with. They formed good relationships with all of them,” said coach Uphoff.
To the seniors, coach Uphoff said, “I’m just proud of how much they grew over the years. Golf is a sport you can do for the rest of your life, so I hope that they continue golfing for the rest of their lives and remember the memories and the relationships it brought to them.”
After nine years coaching the Custer High School girls golf program, Uphoff is also heading on a new adventure as she moves to Watertown.
“I’ve loved my time with the golf program, and I hope that someday I can coach again wherever we end up and stay involved in the sport,” said coach Uphoff.
