SDHSAA sets fan ejection policy

The South Dakota High School Activities Association (SDHSAA) board of directors has approved a new rule governing fan ejections and set a $500 fine for schools that employ coaches who have not taken their required courses.
SDHSAA executive director Dan Swartos said member schools have been asking for a fan ejection policy that could serve as a baseline for the actions taken when an adult is ejected from a contest. Swartos said schools are free to set a stricter policy.

Custer Cruisin’ starts Friday

Thousands of two-wheelers are making their way toward the Black Hills today in advance of the 83rd annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally which starts on Friday and runs through Aug. 13. When they arrive, the town of Custer will be ready for them with special Custer Cruisin’ events planned, bike-themed street vendors and of course restaurants and hotels ready to feed and board the riders.

County pauses backing housing project

The planned new housing project on land just east of Monument Health Custer Hospital hit a snag at the July 26 meeting of the Custer County Commission when the commission declined to approve signing a letter endorsing the planned projects. Instead the letter was tabled to gather more information regarding possibilities within the project.

County approves airport improvement grant

At its July 26 meeting the Custer County Commission approved a pair of grant applications regarding the Custer County Airport, as  Brenden Hendrickson, county airport manager, addressed the commission along with Travis Hirschey of Mead & Hunt, the engineering firm hired by the county to help give guidance to upgrades at the Custer County Airport. The two discussed the grant application known as the Airport Improvement Grant program that would see 275 feet of taxiway constructed at the airport, which would provide more space for hangars.

Lehman makes special delivery to Landover

Charles Lehman has been delivering mail to the residents at Landover Estates for about five or six years and has gotten to know many of the residents well. They’ve also gotten to know his family too. In fact, some of the residents have even taken an interest in his daughter, Ruby, and  have taken time and effort to make them feel special on holidays or special occasions.
“It’s been a huge blessing,” said Lehmann.
Because of the appreciation and kindness they have shown to him and his family over the years, Lehman wanted to do something for them.

Council discusses vacancy of mayor

With the position of mayor currently sitting vacant, many people are wondering what the Hill City Common Council will do next. Originally, three options were presented: the council president can serve in the position as long as practicable, a special election can be held or the council can appoint someone to the position. 
However, the council recently found out that a special election cannot be held without an ordinance in place. The next general election is in June 2024.

Plan shows needs for updated pedestrian crossings

The Hill City Master Transportation Plan Study is near completion it was learned at a meeting held July 25.
Cole Hansen, the intern who completed the study, gave a summary of  the current recommendations, saying some may change but most would not.
Hansen used field data collection, historical data and public meeting and survey results to conduct the research. The final report will be published at the end of summer.

Mining activity to begin near Keystone

Lithium exploration in Keystone  is now underway. While Midwest Lithium  CEO Michael  Schlumpberger calls the process “exploratory,” the company has plans to move to the drilling phase.
“This was an operating mine for decades,” said Schlumpberger of the Ingersoll Mine site on Old Hill City Road, one of two sites Midwest Lithium will be “exploring.”
“People have driven by this mine for decades and decades and decades and they don’t know that it’s there. It blends in,” Schlumpberger said.

Rossknecht gets funding for needed projects

Two initiatives poised to assist Hill City residents recently made their way through Pennington County thanks to county commissioner Ron Rossknecht.
Rossknecht has been trying to assist the Hill City Ambulance since he first learned about its need to have a facility separate from the Fire Department.
