Brain injury class Nov. 9

Black Hills Brain Health will lead a free class to help individuals with brain recovery. 
 
The class will meet 3:30-4:30 p.m. Nov. 9 at 3650 Range Road in Rapid City. A virtual option is available.
 
The class will be led by Dr. Justine Ashokar, a neuropsychologist, and the class is for brain injury survivors — no matter the kind of brain injury experienced (accident, stroke, concussion, etc.). 
 
Medical providers, caregivers and parents could also find the class beneficial and supportive. 

Community foundation keeps moving forward

The Advisory Council of the Hill City Area Community Foundation (HCACF) hosted a Western South Dakota Philanthropy  gathering at Chute Rooster Oct. 14. 
 
The event was an opportunity to share best practices with members of similar councils. 
 
In addition to Hill City’s council, representatives from councils in Custer, Lead/Deadwood, Sturgis, Faith, Wall and New Underwood all attended.
 

All aboard for Trees and Trains 2022

The South Dakota State Railroad Museum (SDRM) is preparing for its annual Trees and Trains event.
 
The exhibit allows businesses and individuals to contribute to the museum’s mission of promoting all things related to the railroads and to celebrate the holiday season.
 
This is the 13th year of Trees and Trains; the event started after the building was completed.

Hill City Main Street merchants will once again welcome trick or treaters on Friday, Oct. 28. 
 
 “It’s a great joy for our businesses to participate, to share welcoming hospitality to children and their parents and (it’s) just one more asset that we have about a small-town, hometown celebration of ‘community,’” said Janet Wetovick-Bily, executive director of the Hill City Area Chamber of Commerce.
 

Increased public camping prompts request for action

The subject of public camping was brought to the Hill City Common Council at its Oct. 11 meeting.
 
Business owner Eric Lind explained that  an individual had slept outside of  Lind’s business, Krull’s Market, creating an “unsafe situation for employees on two  different occasions,” he said.  
 
The incident resulted in one of two arrests made by Pennington County Sheriffs  in town last month.
 

Church community opens pavilion

The Community Lutheran Church in Hill City had a ribbon cutting and potluck event to celebrate the construction of its new pavilion. 
 
The pavilion is a space not just for the church community but for the entire Hill City community, a place constructed “gradually and with a lot of prayer,” according to Marsha Leininger.

Take your left arm and raise it straight up against your face, with your head turned to one side. Put the other arm at your side. Lay down on the floor and stay in this position for a few minutes. Now do that in a space nine inches tall and maybe four or five inches wider while underground in the dark for 18 hours.

Hermosa businesses getting organized

A group of Hermosa-area business owners and interested residents gathered at Hermosa Coffee House in Hermosa the morning of Oct. 11, united in their belief that the town is a sleeping but growing giant and determined to forget a unified voice to benefit the business community.
Valena Baker, owner of the coffee house, led the discussion, which allowed those in attendance to discuss what they saw as important to growth in the community as well as identifying ways to work together and share resources to that end.
“We are all here because we love this community,” Baker said.

Four vie for county commission seats

Three incumbents—Republicans Mike Linde, Craig Hindle and Jim Lintz—and one challenger—independent Kevin Rosse—will vie for three seats with four-year terms on the Custer County Commission in the Nov. 8 General Election.
Linde has lived in Custer County all of his life, and is semi-retired, but still does some logging, construction and ranching. He is nearing the end of his first four-year term on the commission, and serves on the Custer/Fall River Landfill Board as well as the Black Hills National Forest Advisory Board.

Custer man arrested on child porn charges

A Custer man remains in the custody of the U.S. Marshal’s Service after being indicted on child pornography charges by a federal grand jury this past summer. Donald Ray Wurtz faces charges of receipt and possession of child pornography after a grand jury handed down the two-count indictment in late August.
