ICAC works to save children

Recently Hill City business owner Joshua Aaron Ripley was indicted on one count of receipt of child pornography and on one count for the possession of child pornography. His arrest is tied to the hard work the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force does each and every day.

Town of Keystone receives money for well

The Town of Keystone  will receive an ARPA grant for $92,800 and a $102, 200 consolidated loan to begin its well six project.
The news was shared at the July 6 town board meeting in which Trustee Matt Fullilove was praised for his attendance at the state’s Department of Agriculture and National Resources (DANR) meeting that prompted the award.

Frye-Mueller remains District 30 winner

District 30 state senator Julie Frye-Mueller lost a few votes in the recount of her June 7 primary race against Rep. Tim Goodwin, but still won the primary.
According to an article  in the Rapid City Journal, the recount requested by Goodwin following his 46 vote loss to Frye-Mueller was completed June 28.

No rest from restroom chatter in Keystone

Restrooms once again were a major discussion at the Keystone Town Board meeting July 6.
Trustee Bill Babcock looked into the cost of purchasing portapotties and was quoted $3,394 for four.
Discussion centered in part around putting two on Swanzey Street and two by the Borglum Museum. Several business owners gave their opinions on the matter.

Keystone seniors create temporary board

The Keystone Senior Center  has created a temporary board that was voted into office June 30.
The board was voted in by unanimous verbal agreement by the 15 people who attended  the meeting. It was unclear how many of the attending people were current paid members.
What was clear is that collectively the people in attendance had a rich history in the town, some dating back as many as four generations.
Senior center board secretary Kathy Farar said she was “tickled” by the attendance.

Community garden receives challenge grant

On June 29 AARP South Dakota announced that four organizations throughout the state would receive their 2022 Community Challenge grants. This grant is designed to “implement quick-action projects that help communities become more livable in the long-term by improving public places.”

Residents want county to consider zoning

Upset by what they say is an ever-increasing incompatible mix of commercial businesses in residential areas, a group of Custer County residents came before the Custer County Commission at its June 29 meeting to urge the council to consider some sort of zoning that would prohibit commercial enterprise in residential areas.

County doesn’t budge on LEO costs

Custer County Sheriff Marty Mechaley is right where he didn’t want to be last November.
It’s been 231 days since the Custer County Sheriff’s Office took over law enforcement in the Town of Hermosa.
“I feel like I’m no further ahead than I was 231 days ago,” Mechaley told the Custer County Commission at the commission’s June 29 meeting. “I’m in a situation I did not want to be in, in the middle of summer trying to figure out how to bring on extra people.”

When Mary Lappe went to work keeping books for Custer County Candy Company several years ago she had no idea she would one day own the store. However, she and her husband Trapper have dreamed of owning their own business for years and recently that dream came true.
