In telling her military story, Deb Hanagan tells of her childhood as a bit of a vagabond. Her father worked for Hoover, and seemingly every time he would go to work at a factory in another state, the factory would close. His bad luck had the family moving all over the Midwest before finally ending up in southern Illinois.
She goes into detail about her time in the state, how she didn’t particularly love it, didn’t really have any friends and knew her lower middle class family would never be able to pay for her to attend college.

County will halt selling tax certificates

Custer County has paused the practice of selling tax sale certificates as it waits for the state legislature to address the issue in its upcoming session.
At the Nov. 1 meeting of the Custer County Commission the commission, as the suggestion of both the state’s Department of Revenue and county state’s attorney Tracy Kelley, voted unanimously to rescind its resolution that allowed the county to sell the tax certificates of people who are behind on property taxes.

Veterans Day program Thursday at Armory

Tomorrow at 2 p.m., the Custer Jr./Sr. High School and American Legion Post No. 46 will present the 29th annual Veterans Day program at the Custer Armory.  All are welcome to attend. Following a welcome by principal Tobey Cass and student body president Emily Borkowski will conduct the presentation of colors by the Custer Veterans Honor Guard, the national anthem sung by the CHS Choir under the direction of Ms. Hannah Rehmeier, as well as the recitation of the pledge of allegiance led by Jr. High student council members Lila Moore, Aniston Morgan and Mya Heller.

Doyle tired of ‘excuses’ on utility installation

County highway superintendent Jess Doyle said he has tried them all several times when it comes to having contractors bury fiber optic cables at the outermost point of the right of way of county roads rather than cut up the roads.
He said it’s falling on deaf ears.

Custer receives Healthy Hometown Award

The City of Custer was presented with the 2023 Healthy Hometown Powered by Wellmark Community Award during the Chronic Disease Prevention & Health Promotion Annual Partners Meeting Oct. 12. The award recognizes Custer for its accomplishments in health improvement initiatives within the community.

Herman sentence modification denied

A Custer man who is serving time in state prison for vehicular homicide was denied a request to have his sentence adjusted so he could complete college.
Nicholas Herman, 21, was sentenced in April to 10 years in prison with six suspended for vehicular homicide after a vehicle he was driving drunk on New Years Eve 2022 crashed on East North Street in Rapid City. The crash killed 17-year-old Carter Bader, who was a senior at Custer High School.

Veterans will be honored Friday

As Veterans Day draws near Hill City High School is again taking time to honor men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. All veterans as well as the general public are invited to the assembly at Gins Gym at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10.

When April Purdie, manager for Hill City Turtle Town, arrived at work on Friday morning, Oct. 27, a little before 10 a.m., she knew something was wrong as soon as she unlocked the back door and stepped into the building. A table kept in front of an old, secured access door was not in its place. Someone had pushed through that old door during the night. By 10:15 a.m. Pennington County Sheriff’s Office deputy Doug Kimball was on site meeting with Purdie and Chris Busby, owner of the business.

New wellness center opens in Hill City

A new chiropractic and wellness center has opened its doors in Hill City, as of Nov. 1. Chiropractor Dave McDonald and his wife, Jennifer, relocated their clinic from Custer to Hill City, simultaneously joining The Wellness Way, a national organization that serves as an alternative to the more mainstream healthcare environment and mindset. 
“We are a network of health restoration clinics that think and act differently to solve health challenges others can’t, and people come to us as a last resort,” Dr. Dave explained.
