Man stabbed in VFW

An Edgemont man will face aggravated assault charges with a deadly weapon charges following a stabbing incident in the basement of Custer VFW last Friday evening.
According to the Custer County Sheriff’s Office, at 11:44 p.m. on Sept. 27, a male called 911 to report he had been stabbed. Sheriff Marty Mechaley said it is believed a verbal argument turned into a physical altercation, resulting in the victim being stabbed approximately eight times in the chest, neck and arm.  

Paving discussion front and center at meeting

The Hill City Common Council met on Monday for its regular meeting.

All aldermen were present at the meeting, although aldermen Jim Peterson and Bill Miner teleconferenced in.

BID board nears final design

The Hill City Business Improvement District Board (BID board) did not have a quorum at its Sept 19 meeting. However, those present were still able to discuss the projects — paving the alleyway behind Hill City Senior Center and renovating the senior center.

Sidewalk repairs enter fourth week

The Hill City sidewalk project has entered its fourth week.

At a construction meeting on Monday, representatives from Hill City, the South Dakota Department of Transportation (DOT) and Complete Concrete (the company responsible for doing the work) met to discuss the project.

“I’ve heard positive things about the project so far,” said Kathy Skorzewski, Hill City mayor.

Chamber main focus at town board meeting

Keystone Chamber of Commerce Board President Julie Smoragiewicz asked the Keystone Town Board for fairness when dealing with the Chamber at the most recent town board meeting.

“It does not seem appropriate for the chamber to be held to a different standard,” Smoragiewicz said. “It seems that at every turn our heads are being turned under water. And we’re focusing on trying to breathe. It’s just incredibly challenging to try to navigate the ever changing turns of the town.”

Buffalo Roundup bigger than ever

It’s called one of the last great events of the Old West, it attracts thousands of spectators from all over the world each year and this year’s Custer State Park (CSP) 54th annual Buffalo Roundup, which takes place this Friday, will be bigger than ever—at least in terms of the numbers of bison being collected. 
“Our numbers for bison are around 1,450 this year,” said CSP visitor services program manager Kobee Stalder, “so, yes, our bison total is up from the previous years.”

Hollywood comes to Four Mile

For Rapid City filmmaker Ryan Hall, what is happening this week at Four Mile Old West Town west of Custer is the fulfillment of a dream. Hall is the producer for “The Blackwood,” a Western horror movie for which the opening scenes are being filmed at Four Mile. 
Hall said getting to this point has been a two-year process filled with ups and downs. 
“It’s been a bumpy ride,” said Hall. “There are a lot of highs and lows with something like this. You’re on top of the mountain for a minute then ... your heart sinks.”

The Custer County Commission is standing firm on its refusal to intervene in a dispute between landowners in the CBJJ Subdivision in south central Custer County over cattle grazing near homes. 

SHMAAF concerts lost money in 2016 and ’17

Kevin Teasley first came on the local music scene when he and local pastor Van Arp put together two back-to-back outdoor concerts in 2016 and 2017, both of which lost money.
Teasley had taken note of Arp’s first concert endeavor in 2014 with Firefall as the headliner and sponsored by the local arts council. 
“The spring after that, he asked if I was going to do another one. He said he had done some concerts in California,” Arp recalled.
