10 years ago, 2013 — The City of Custer, and the Black Hills in general, was recovering from Winter Storm Atlas. Storm amounts varied, with some areas receiving 18 inches while others received up to three feet. There were reported drifts of 12 feet tall, and wind gusts as high as 70 mph were reported. The city was brought to a halt, and the only sounds heard Saturday after the storm cleared were those of city, county and state vehicles carving out paths in the roadways...The U.S. government partially shut down after Congress couldn’t agree on a spending bill.
