Thursday, March 21
2:32 p.m.: Deputies helped search-and-rescue personnel with locating a lost child on a large peak near Sylvan Lake. The lost youth was part of a school group that seems to lose someone every year they take this hike.
3:45 p.m.: More lost people were reported from the same group near Sylvan Lake. They were quickly found and reunited with the rest of the crew.
3:47 p.m.: A deputy assisted another agency with an investigation on Rose Place near Custer.

10 years ago, 2014 — Black Hills Burger and Bun Co. won the award for the best sandwich in the Hills in fan favorite voting held by the the Rapid City Journal. The competition was the paper’s fourth annual Starch Madness competition, which runs every March, coinciding with March Madness. The restaurant’s “Hot Granny” was the winning burger...Starting July 1 South Dakota was to join dozens of other states that banned text messaging while driving after Gov. Dennis Daugaard signed a bill banning it at the end of the year’s legislative session.

5:28 p.m.: The Hwy. 79 chaos continued with a vehicle reportedly dragging a loose strap along the roadway near Fairburn. No one was available to check on it. There are ancient tales, legends really, of a state agency whose primary job it is to handle traffic-related problems on highways…

10 years ago, 2014 — Peg Ryan was named the Volunteer of the Year for 2013 by the Custer Area Chamber of Commerce at the Custer Area Chamber of Commerce Spring Fling, which was held at Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
