Hill City Center opens

The brand new Hill City Center opened its doors this week.
 Although not yet completely finished, the office meeting and event space has regular hours for the public to enjoy. 
“This is your center,” said Mary Walton, who staffs the office. Her favorite part, she says with a smile, is “when people start coming back in. The great thing is that this is for the community. It belongs to everybody.”

Wheel tax increase being considered

Pennington County residents may see an increase in vehicle wheel tax.
The County Commission voted to approve the first reading of the proposed $5 tax, up from the current $2 tax that was implemented in 2020. State statutes limit the tax to $60 per vehicle.
According  to the Pennington County  website, counties in the state are “required by the state legislature to adopt a wheel tax in order to be eligible to receive funding from the state’s Local Bridge Improvement Grant (BIG) fund for the construction, reconstruction and repair of bridges.”

Anniversaries are always memorable dates: Ellsworth AFB (80 years—2022), Custer City (150 years—2025), Custer Senior Center (50 yrs—2021); and the list goes on and on.
The radio has been a life force in South Dakota for at least a hundred years.

Hidden Gems - The remnants of Spokane

Spokane is an amazing place to explore year round. Easily accessible by most individuals, the ghost town was founded in 1890 as a mining site. It was rich in silver, copper, zinc and mica. 
The town bustled in the 1920s and even boasted a school building. But by  the 1940s, the mine and town began to decline. According to some internet sources, activity on the site may have continued into the 1980s when it was completely abandoned.

Fun at the fantasy of florals flower show

Fairies whispered between petals at the annual Hill City Evergreen Garden Club Flower Show July 23 where the theme, A Fantasy of Florals, left an abundance of room for imaginations to blossom. 
The flower show began in the ’90s during the second start up of the Hill City Evergreen Garden Club. At the time there were only 10 members and the show was held at the Lutheran church with entries displayed on the pews. Now they have over 45 members and the flower show has expanded immensely.

Tabled lottery comes before council

A tabled item from  a previous  Hill City Common Council meeting was brought back for review July 25.
The application  was submitted by the Boys and Girls Club to host a charitable  lottery. The lottery is for an Indian motorcycle that would give 51 percent of ticket sales to the Boys and Girls club and 49 percent to the bike’s owner.
The applicant requested to place a tent up in the public right of way in front of the Mangy Moose for sales to take place. The city takes over Main Street  from the atate during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Despite its proximity to the highway, Little Falls offers unsurpassed seclusion and tranquility, especially when you have it to yourself. 
The trail to Little Falls can be easily navigated by most people, with just a tiny decline on a short rocky section. The rest of the trail is flat and well-defined. 
The creek meanders alongside the trail, creating a beautiful audio soundtrack to your walk.
Along the way there are a few trails beckoning you to dip into the creek.
