Doris ‘Dotty’ Mae Tillman

On April 24, 1932, the lives of Arthur and Dorothy Gould were brightened when they welcomed a tiny little baby girl into this world. They named her Doris Mae Gould. But she preferred to be called “Dotty.”
 
Doris grew up in Hill City, S.D. She attended all 12 years of school in the original Hill City school building. She was active in choir, science and debate (which she enjoyed all her life). Doris had a beautiful singing voice.

Lane Ellsworth Snell was born to Dwayne E. and E. Jean (Batsell) Snell Aug. 31, 1963, in Hutchinson, Kansas. He attended various schools in South Dakota and Indiana and graduated from Brandon-Valley High School in Brandon, S.D. in 1981. 
 

Gladys Clemetson

Gladys M. Clemetson (Deneke) passed away Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2022, in Rapid City, S.D. 
 
She is survived by husband, Robert Clemetson, sister Evelyn Bradley (Gary) and sister-in-law Doris Deneke. Daughters, Lesia McLaughlin (John), and Carol Siemonsma, son Kevin Clemetson (Melissa). Grandchildren, Colton McLaughlin (Julie), Kendra Michel (Jason), Zachery Siemonsma, Brianna Clemetson, Dawson Clemetson, Allison Clemetson. Great-granddaughters, Kinsley and Kenna McLaughlin, and Rylee Jo Michel. 
 

Norma Henderson

Norma Jean Henderson was born April 9, 1931, in Wessington Springs, S.D., to Lloyd Vernon Johnson and Mary Agnes Hayes Johnson. Her family were teachers and farmers; Norma was a product of rural life. She graduated as valedictorian of her high school and took a post as a teacher at the one-room Pleasant Valley School in Hand County, S.D. She began with 12 students in eight grades and maintained throughout her life that her foremost accomplishment was teaching children to read.
 

Kevin Locke

Kevin Locke (Lakota name Tȟokéya Inážiŋ, meaning “The First to Arise” is Lakota (Hunkpapa band) and Anishinaabe. He is a preeminent player of the North American Indigenous flute, a traditional storyteller, cultural ambassador, recording artist, fluent Lakota language and Indigenous sign language speaker and educator. He is most known for his hoop dance, The Hoop of Life.

Patricia Hott

Patricia Walker Hott was born Nov. 5, 1943, and was the daughter of Allen and Barbara Walker of Pistol River, Ore.
Patty went to school and worked in San Francisco and Eureka, Calif.  She retired from the Department of Transportation in California and moved to Custer, S.D., where she married the love of her life, Robert Hott.  
Patty loved Custer and the area. She enjoyed and attended  all the summer events in the Hills. She was an artist, quilter, embroiderer, photographer and avid reader. She loved music, movies, art work and good food.

Sharon Terviel

Sharon Lee Terviel was born April 3, 1949, in Lancaster, Penn., to Vernon and Edna (Grodland) Kahl. 
 
As a child, Sharon and her family moved to Illinois and then to Hill City, S.D., where she married her second love, Ronald Terviel, Sr. 
 
Sharon died Sept. 24, 2022. She was 73.
 
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Clifford Lee Jennings; mother, Edna; father, Vernon Kahl; sisters, Jennifer Forrest, Joyce Cofield and Shirley Doyle;  and maternal and paternal grandparents. 
 

Sheila Grieme

Sheila Faye Grieme, 73, of Brookings, S.D., formerly of Hill City, S.D., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2022, surrounded by her loving family.  
 
A Celebration of Life was held 4-6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, S.D.  
 
Memorial Services were 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4 at the Community Lutheran Church, Hill City, S.D. 
 
Following the service at the church, the family invited everyone to bring their favorite potluck dish that reminded them of Sheila.
 

Steven Aves

Steven Dale Aves was born Dec. 6, 1948 in Lansing, Mich., to Layton and Phyllis Aves.
 
Steve always liked the slogan “Only the Best” that his employer Meijer used, and it fit him perfectly. 
 
He was only the best husband, the best dad and the best grandpa. He was that special combination of gentle love and firm resolve. 
 

Floyd Mills

Floyd Robert Mills was born March 9, 1927, in Appleton, Minn., to Floyd and Josephine (Huzenga) Mills. A child of the Great Depression and Dirty Thirties, he had a Tom Sawyer childhood, running barefoot in the summer, fishing at the old millpond and following radio exploits of Captain Midnight, The Shadow and more.
