Daniel Ray Straw, 67, of Hill City, S.D., passed away Nov. 12, 2021 at his residence in Hill City.
Services are pending at the Little White Church in Hill City.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home in Custer, S.D.

A colorful figure around the Black Hills area exited for the next world around Aug. 18, 2021. He was Born in Arizona  March 18, 1952.
Thomas could often be seen walking around Hill City, S.D., with his fishing pole and a rucksack. Many Hill City residents will likely remember a few chuckles they had while talking with this unique gentleman. 

Orville Hall

Orville H. Hall was born June 30, 1938, in Pierre, S.D., to Sam and Signe (Sletto) Hall. He grew up in Vivian, S.D., the youngest of five brothers.
In 1956 he graduated from Vivian High School and went on to attend his mother’s alma mater, Black Hills Teachers College (now Black Hills State University).

Orville Hall

Denise Etzkorn

Denise Juel Etzkorn was born Feb. 13, 1951. She was a  friend to all and a beacon for Hill City, S.D.
Denise was born in Illinois to Leonard and Augusta Meyers. She eventually moved to the Black Hills of South Dakota and spent the rest of her years in Hill City. Denise wore many hats from waitress to  fossil preparer and art council member to resort manager.
She and passed away unexpectedly June 28 from cancer. She was 70.

Martha (Sue) Upshaw

Martha (Sue) Upshaw passed to Glory May 13, 2021. Sue passed away peacefully surrounded by her family. Sue was born to Monroe Harris and Mary E Swanzey Harris in the Black Hills of South Dakota on Feb. 22, 1939. Sue was the 11th of 14 children. Sue had a happy and adventurous life growing up in the hills of South Dakota. Sue loved the Black Hills and the history that her family shared as a part of the growth and development in Hill City and Keystone. Sue was the granddaughter of David Swanzey and Carrie Ingalls Swanzey and as such took pride in the leadership they contributed to the area.

Danny Bergin

A Celebration of Life/Burial Service for Danny Bergin will be held May 29 at 11 a.m. at the Hill City Cemetery with Fr. Mark Horn officiating.  Following the service, a luncheon will be provided at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.  Danny was a long-time resident of Hill City and a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima; she passed away on September 1, 2020, in Lexington, Kentucky.    For luncheon planning purposes, please RSVP to marygraehler@windstream.net or 859-552-6413.

Victor Pohribnak

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Victor “Vick” Edward Pohribnak of Hill City, SD, formerly of Killdeer, ND, on 22 April, 2021 at the age of 75 years.

 Vick will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 34 years, Rita; his children Daniell (Ryan) Steele of Vincennes, In., Dallas (Kevin) Totten of Mena, Ark., Joshua Pohribnak of Chula Vista, Cali.; his grandchildren, Donovan, Julia, Harlee, Maycee and Annabella; and his sisters, Mary, Mabel, Emily, and Ethyl.

Alvin Johnson

Alvin Louis Johnson, age 91, passed away April 19, 2021. Preceded in death by his wife Elsie of 59 years and his son David “Doc” Johnson.  Alvin is survived by his daughters Linda (David) Cartwright; Laura (Paul)  San Nicolas; grandchildren Daniel and Patrick Cartwright; Michael, Catherine and Mitchell San Nicolas; great grandson Ira Cartwright; great granddaughter Meridian Cartwright; nieces Valerie Larson, Renee Hadala; Sandra Snyder and Suzanne Goldthop; nephew Jimmy Larson.  Alvin was a graduate of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Rapid City, S.D.

Marjorie Heddles

Marjorie Jane Heddles, 92, peacefully went to be with Jesus Jan. 16, 2021, at her home in Rapid City, S.D.

Marge was born April 2, 1928, in Wolf Point, Mont., to a banker turned farmer and his wife.

After graduating from CSU she married R.J. Heddles. In 1952 they moved to Palmer, Alaska, and she became a schoolteacher, mother and dairy farmer’s partner. Seventeen years and four children later they moved to Fort Collins, Colo., where she was an active substitute teacher and homemaker.
