Track team opens season in Newcastle

The Custer High School track team got its season off to a strong start last week in Newcastle, Wyo., where it competed in the Laura Chord Memorial.
The meet featured schools from both Wyoming and South Dakota, ranging in size from Thunder Basin High School in Gillette, Wyo., to Midwest, Wyo. (population 283).
The meet was both a high school and junior high meet, and had as many as 180 entries between the two in some events, making for a long day. Custer head coach Karen Karim said the weather was decent until the afternoon, when it became cold and windy.

’Cats hope for return to podium this spring

Fresh off a second-place finish at last year’s Class A State Meet, the Custer High School girls track team will make a push to return to that spot—or higher—at this year’s state meet with a handful of returning girls looking to match or better state finishes a year ago.
At the top of the list for returning girls is Jojo Larsen, who was second in the 100 at last year’s state meet and third in the 200, as well as a member of the medley team that finished in third place.

Rangers off to an early start

For the first time in nine years, the weather allowed the Hill City High School Ranger Track and Field team to compete in its first meet of the season at the Laura Chord Memorial High School/Middle School Invite in Newcastle, Wyo. 
“When we saw it was going to be 60 in Newcastle and they were having the meet, we talked about it and said, ‘We’ve got to take advantage of it,’” said head coach Joe Noyes. “As coaches, we were really pleased. The kids performed well.”

Pole vaulters set high bar at indoor meet

The Custer Wildcat pole vaulters set a high bar (literally) at the Chadron State Colllege High School Invitational indoor track meet last Saturday. Custer Athletes took the first place spots in both the boys and the girls pole vault events at the meet.
Sisters Cienna and Tenlee Stiefel came in first and second place, respectively. Cienna, who is a junior also broke the meet record of 12’, which she tied for last year, making the new record 12’2.
Tenlee earned second with 10’, and teammate Addie Sander earned fifth place with 7’6.

It is often said it’s difficult to beat the same team three times in the same season, particularly if the teams are closely matched.
That saying didn’t hold water on a pair of occasions last week.

Ranger girls end season at SoDak 16

The Hill City High School Ranger girls basketball team traveled to Chamberlain Feb. 29 to face the unbeaten Flandreau Fliers for the SoDak 16. 
Head coach Anna Eckert said, “We came up short against Flandreau. They are a well-rounded team that move extremely well without the ball and have the height and length to give you trouble on both ends of the floor. 

Boys close season with loss to Custer

For the third time this season, the Hill City High School Ranger boys basketball team faced off against the Custer Wildcats Feb. 27. This time it was for the Class A Region 8 Quarterfinal. 
The Wildcats took an early lead, but the Rangers stayed in the game. The teams tied at 16 each at the end of the first period. 
In the second quarter, the Rangers took their biggest lead of the game at 25-19. However, the Wildcats took the lead back and ended halftime at 39-36 in favor of Custer. 

Wildcat boy wrestlers grab third at state

The Custer High School boys wrestling team has shattered school records for the second year in a row by earning third place as a team in the Class B State Tournament, one-upping last year’s fourth place finish. The team also came home with two champions in the tournament—Tray Weiss and Parker Noem. Six other wrestlers also placed.
The girls team also had several wrestlers in the tournament with one place-winner, Jessica Hite. The team placed 19th out of 62 teams.

Wildcats burned by Comets in region play

Poor three-point shooting and costly turnovers at key moments were trouble for the Custer High School girls basketball team Feb. 20 at Hart Ranch, as the Wildcats lost 51-41 to Rapid City Christian in the first round of Region 8A play.
“The real difference in the game was three-pointers,” head coach Tayton Vincent said, pointing out Custer went 2-19 from deep while the comets connected on seven of 23 attempts. Custer made more two-point baskets, and made more free throws.

Wrestling season ends with wrestlers on podium

The Hill City High School girls wrestling team season has ended, with all three wrestlers finishing in the top 10 in their weight class  at state.
Senior Brittney Hanson (26-6) finished seventh in her 165-pound weight class and scored nine team points. Hanson defeated opponents  from Pierre, T.F. Riggs and Mitchell before the seventh-round match, where she won by fall over Ashley Tolsma of Bon Homme-Scotland-Avon at  1:54.
Tiara Faehnrich (30-8) also  placed seventh in the 138-pound girls division scoring nine team points.
